studies. With thousands of fellow students online every day, it doesn’t take long to find someone willing to lend a hand with that tricky assignment.
But others are looking for more personal advice – either with life decisions such as which uni to go to, or with issues around their health or their relationships. Others come just for a natter on the busy ‘chat’ forum.
The message boards are at the heart of The Student Room, but there’s plenty more to be found as well. The wiki houses thousands of articles covering topics from how to write a personal statement through to what you should pack before going to university for the first time. Since all these articles live in the wiki, they can be edited by other users. It’s one example of where the community really pulls together, with everyone chipping in to help keep articles up-to-date and relevant.
Special guests make regular appearances on the site. David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Caroline Lucas have all joined us, taking part in live Q&A sessions with TSR users. Comedian Mark Watson recently popped in for an interview and Times Higher Education editor Phil Baty has been online to explain the thinking behind the World University Rankings.
But at the heart of what’s best about The Student Room is its community. It’s a friendly site where everyone is made welcome – and people often band together and start up their own areas of the site. For instance, several foodies got together and put together the ‘TSR recipe book’, where anyone can add their own favourite dish. Eggy bread, asparagus risotto and Muhallabia are among the delicacies to be found there (not heard of the last one? You’re missing out...). Other users banded together some time ago to create the TSR ‘model House of Commons’ – where the latest political issues are debated. Still more have become TSR bloggers, posting videos and written articles on their experiences of school and university. Those connections go beyond the website: more than 100 TSR users will head off to France early next year for the second TSR Ski and Snowboard trip. As you’d expect from a site that’s been growing for more than 10 years, The Student Room is a big place. The best way to find out what it’s all about is to come visit for yourself.
