Opposition to J8 development The Villager
New councillors BEARSTED has three new parish councillors.
They are Alan Rowe, an ad- vanced driving instructor, of Royston Road; Tony Kettle, a retired fire officer and former parish councillor, of Birling Av- enue; and Alison Hodges, from Roseacre Lane.
There were just three nomi- nations for the three vacancies created in June, so the trio were elected unopposed with effect from November 1, 2012. There is still one vacancy, fol- lowing the more recent resigna- tion of Paul Blackmore, to which a councillor will be co-opted.
COUNCILLORS have submit- ted their vehement opposition to development at Junction 8 of the M20, as proposed in Maidstone’s Core Strategy. They are also concerned at the potential increase in traffic from new housing at Langley Park, Sutton Road and Bicknor Wood. Cllr Denis Spooner writes: “The council objects in the strongest possible terms to the proposed employment loca- tions east of M20 J8, south of M20 J8 and at Woodcut Farm, as well as to any development
Code of conduct THE Localism Act 2011 s27 states a parish council must adopt a new code of conduct on or after July 1, 2012, to com- ply with Section 28 of the 2011 Act. Bearsted Parish Council hereby advises that Full Coun- cil on October 9, 2012, adopted the Kent Model of the New Code of Conduct for Parish Councillors.
Copies of each councillor’s Register of Disclosable Pecu- niary Interests are available in the parish office and will shortly be on the website.

whatsoever around J8. “The parish council consid- ers that any development in this area will be in a totally un- sustainable and isolated rural location at considerable dis- tance from the built-up area of Maidstone and far from all local services.”
The council believes the bor- ough council should heed ad- vice in the National Planning Policy Framework to provide long-term protection to the area as a valued local land- scape and/or green belt.
Funding petition RESIDENTS are being urged to sign a petition to help safe- guard local services.
Maidstone Council wants to replace its Concurrent Func- tions Grant with a parish serv- ices scheme, which the Kent Association of Local Councils believes will be detrimental to parishes throughout the bor- ough.
In order to get the issue de- bated before the full council, 1,500 signatures are needed from the 37 parishes.
Quality tatus
THE wealth of activities organ- ised by the parish council in Bearsted could help it obtain “Quality Parish” status. Chairman, Cllr Richard Ash, said the council arranged and supported a wide range of events for local people, includ- ing the successful Jubilee event, bonfire and firework display, classic car show and circus. The criteria to become a qual- ity parish are under review but, once the new ones are in place, Cllr Ash said the council should resurrect its application. He said: “We might have fallen down in a few things, but we are a quality parish in many ways. We have done a lot of things of which we can be proud.”
Party people
VOLUNTEERS are needed to help the police, community warden and Holy Cross Men’s group run a Christmas party for vulnerable elderly in Bearsted. The parish council has do- nated £250 towards the party, to be held at Madginford Hall on Saturday, December 15. Anyone who can help can call the community warden on 07813 712105.
