School cyclists raise funds in Amanda’s memory

MEMBERS of staff from Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone, completed the London to BrightonBike ride in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The charity has had a special place in the hearts

of staff and students at Invicta since student Amanda Slann lost her battle against leukaemia. It was perfect weather for cycling and everybody

enjoyed the experience – even the challenge of Ditchling Beacon. As they crossed the line on Brighton seafront theywere delighted to begreeted by Amanda’s mother, June. The teamhas raised more than £2,000 and there

is still more money coming in. Donations can be made atwww.justgiving.com/InvictaRidersL2B

The Invicta cyclists celebrate on arrival in Brighton School rated outstanding

PUPILS and staff at Invicta Grammar School are celebrating after being judged outstanding in all categories in their latest Ofsted report. The inspection of the 1,220-

pupil school inHuntsman Lane, Vinters Park, was carried out under the new framework, which involves short notice and more time in the classroom ob- serving teaching. Following their two-day visit

in September, inspectors gave the school top marks overall andineachoffoursections– achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management. The glowing report high- lighted “an unyielding pursuit

of excellence” by the head- teacher, senior and middle lead- ers and governors. “Students’ welfare and wellbeing are en- riched and enhanced by an en- vironment and ethos which value personal success, support endeavour, encourage creativity and promote enterprise”, it said.

Inspectors said the outstand-

ing teaching “inspires, enthuses and motivates students in their thirst for knowledge.” Relation- ships were excellent and teach- ers had very high expectations, using their excellent subject knowledge to help students maximise their achievement. The team commented on the highly effective curriculum and the rising achievement of the

popular sixth form, which was outstanding. Head of school Julie Derrick

said: “We are delighted to have received such a fantastic report. It is a superb achievement and one ofwhich we are very proud, particularly as Invicta is the first school in Kent to receive out- standing accreditation under the new Ofsted framework.” She thanked students, staff

and governors for their hard work and commitment and par- ents for their continual support. “This report, along with the fact that we have secured £1.8 mil- lion for a new English and per- forming arts building, is like Christmas all at once. “Our students are very lucky,”

she said.
