T
he Rally of the Tall Pines is a rally unlike any other in North America. Since 1997, it has
called Bancroft ‘home.’ Te combination of Ban- croft and the Canadian Rally Championship is a perfect pairing, featuring 200km of stages carved out of some gnarly landscape left by an ancient mountain range called the Grenville. Tere were volcanoes and mountains so large
they would rival the Himalayas. Although the mountains have somewhat diminished over the last 600 million years, the hills remain. Beneath the sur- face are hidden treasures like fossils, metamorphic specimens, semi-precious gems and gold. Yes, gold. Te very gold that started Ontario’s gold rush in the 1860s. North Hastings enjoys the highest water-to-land
ratio in the province. Like other cottage/recre- ational areas, there are countless lakes, rivers and streams. Te Mighty Madawaska River provides some 90km of uninterrupted waterways for the se- rious paddler, while there are other, quieter routes that appeal to novices as well. For example, Con- roy’s Marsh is teeming with various species of water fowl, fish and fauna. And don’t forget whitewater rafting, we’ve got some of the finest. Whether you prefer a lazy sail around the lake or a more aggres- sive form of travel, North Hastings has you cov- ered.
Tere are many nice restaurants, shops, artists’ studios and galleries throughout the area. Te Ban- croft Village Playhouse, which was once the town hall and the former railway station, is being re- vamped to house a spectacular mineral museum. It will also be the new home of the Bancroft and Dis- trict Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy fishing? We have some of the best and as
soon as the ice is thick enough, we haul the huts out for ice fishing. Tousands of kilometres of mapped and
groomed trails cater to the hiker, ATV or snowmo- bile enthusiast. Tere are a couple of good downhill skiing and snowboarding facilities, a natural luge
