Besides the normal maintenance from the other storage boats, mostly wooden runabouts, they have one major restoration job. This is on a 25 foot Lyman, which will have almost everything replaced. Just fi nished was a Dark Harbor 12½, which was a total rebuild.


Portland Yacht Services has hauled out FORT GAINES in their dry dock OWL on Friday last week. She is out for a shave, haircut and a U. S. Coast Guard inspection and was up for just a week. FT. GAINES is operated by Lionelle Plante Assocoates and is 120 feet long by about 34 feet wide and weighs 168 tons.


Edgecomb Boat Works in Edgecomb is right in the middle of hauling season and at this time they have increased their stor- age customers by adding some fi berglass boats. They also have out in the yard a Little Harbor 34, which they are repowering. She presently has 454 gasoline engines and these are being replaced with QSB 5.9 liter Cum- mins diesels. They will also need to install new impellers, shafts, exhaust system and instrument panel.


This winter a 42 foot 1964 Norman Hodgdon built boat, PERSEVERANCE is coming in for some repair work. She will also be repowering with a pair of 5.9 liter Cummins diesels. This also means that they will be doing some plumbing and electrical work. Also on the work order are new win- dows. This boat is for sale if someone is looking for a great cruising boat. A 40 foot Norman Hodgdon, built the same year, will come in and also receive a


Hodgdon Yacht of East Boothbay has shipped another one of its custom 10.5 metre tenders, hull #413, this one to the super-yacht builder Oceanco, in The Neth- erlands the fi rst week of October. Hodgdon launched the recent-era initia- tive to build superyacht tenders about three years ago. In that time they have shipped three of the ultra high end tenders and have three more under construction. Hodgdon Custom Tenders is the newest division in the Hodgdon Shipbuilding orga- nization whose specialty is building custom and semi-custom tenders that serve the large yacht market (typically more than 80m in length).


The Hodgdon team recently returned from the Monaco Yacht Show where there was considerable interest in the company’s custom and semi-custom tender program from many superyacht projects from around the world.


The superyacht industry is one of the most skilled-labor intensive industries in the world. Each custom tender takes many thou- sands of skilled worker hours to complete. Once delivered, there are hundreds of hours

required to maintain the tenders in world class condition for the owner and guests to enjoy.


Hodgdon currently employs more than 120 workers, the vast majority of whom are highly skilled craftsmen and women. The Custom Tenders division alone employs more than 15 in the Murray Hill facility. Further information on the Hodgdon

Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol has a new storage building under construction on the opposite side of the street from where their main yard is located. This will be a heated storage building and the foundation has already been poured. The building will arrive in mid October and will be completed in November. To date, the building has not been completely fi lled.


Those that have not been to South Bris- tol in a while will see something missing, which is the main building that was built during World War II. The building was up for approximately 70 years and came down in less than two hours. The site of this build- ing has been used for outside storage in the winter and parking during the summer. One of the jobs they just completed was on a wooden launch which received a Mercruiser engine. This winter they will be repowering a 26 foot wooden lobster boat that was built in Essex, Massachusetts about 35 years ago. She has a six cylinder gasoline engine and this will be replaced with anoth- er. Besides the normal maintenance on all of their storage boats, they have a couple of engines to replace, some electrical and a lot of painting and varnishing.

George has just fi nished a Wesmac 55 for a customer from Massachusetts. She is a commercial boat with four bunks, head and separate shower, work area and a full galley. She is powered with a C 18 Caterpillar diesel engine. She went overboard on 15 August. In the shop, is a Calvin 36 in for a repair


to her bow. She was doing approximately 12 knots and hit a spindle stopping in 6 feet. The damage was on the starboard side approximately 3 or 4 feet after the bow and up near the rub and toe rail . They called SW Boat Works of Lamoine and had them lay up a fi berglass section so it was easier
