Page 12. MAINE COASTAL NEWS November 2012

From the Director – We hope that everyone is safe after Hurricane Sandy came through the Northeast yesterday. We were fortunate in Maine, with mostly power outages and a lot of rain. As a matter of fact, today I have seen rain, wind, fog, sun and then thunder! My

prayers go out to all of the people that were severely affected by Hurricane Sandy. This also includes the crew of the HMS Bounty that sank during the storm, losing two crew members, including the captain. The HMS Bounty spent a weekend in Belfast last August. As a matter of fact, the crew had wanted to come to our home and play a game of paintball while they were here. We just didn’t happen to arrange the game in time before they had to leave port. We told them we can play paintball the next time around……but we just never know what the future has in store. I have tried to refl ect on the moment instead of waiting until a “better time.” Now, more than ever, I realize that it is better to do these things when we have a chance, because a better time may not come. Let’s be sure and enjoy our family and friends!

Since the last Director’s report, the meetings are starting once again for the “fall run.”

The Maine Fishermen’s Forum is well underway with planning for the next Forum in March, 2013. If you have plans to have a seminar, please let one of the directors of the Forum know fairly soon. The list is fi lling up already! You can fi nd the list of directors on the Maine Fishermen’s Forum web site. You can also contact me and I’ll pass your request on to Chilloa Young, the Executive Director of the Forum. I believe there are still openings for the Trade Show if you’d like to sign up for a booth. We also have scholarship applications if you’d like to have one. We’re just a phone call or e-mail away.

The Lobster Institute is getting underway this week with their fi rst board meeting of the season.

The plans are to

start planning the next Canadian/US Town Meeting, which is always a good talking table. This year (2013) the meeting will be held in New Brunswick. I will keep you informed of more information as the time goes on. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to open the doors of communications once again with Maine and Canada. We do have one major thing in common: the lobster industry and the ever changing economy. The Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association is gearing up for their Annual Weekend, which will be their 50th

this coming year! The Annual Weekend and Trade Show will be January 24th

at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth, Massachusetts. D.E.L.A. has been invited once again to come along and participate in this event. I’d like to “Thank” Executive Director, Bill Adler and Assistant Executive Director, Beth Casoni for their invitation and wish them the best and “good weather” for this 50th

Anniversary Celebration! If the weather is good and you’d like to take a

little “cabin fever reliever trip,” I’m sure that you’d have a good time at the gathering. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact Beth or Bill at (781) 545-6984 and they will be happy to assist. Mike and I attended a meeting at the Comfort Inn in Belfast that was hosted by the Penobscot East Resource Center and Maine Sea Grant last week. The clarifi cation of the Workshop and overall project purpose is as follows: “What state fi shery access rules would allow a successful local & coastal fi shery to exist and persist in a changing ecosystem?” Bottom line is – the sustainability of the place, rather than just a given fi shery. This is the explanation of the workshop which was very informative with a lot of careful thought going into it for our future.

The bottom line explanation is as stated in PERC’s background summary:

Due

to declines in species abundance and the resultant closures or access restrictions, few young Maine fi shermen possess licenses to more than one fi shery – a sharp contrast to older fi shermen who still have multiple licenses. This is very important to sustain a future for our next generation of fi shermen and their families. The meeting schedule is as follows:

November 5, 6 - 8 p.m. Ellsworth November 14, 6 – 8 p.m. Rockland November 26, 6 – 8 p.m. Portland December 10, 6 – 8 p.m. Machias Please try to attend at least one of the meetings and try to encourage our younger fi shermen to take an interest in the importance of attending. Our future and independence as individual business owners depends on this. Penobscot East can be reached at (207) 367-2708 if you have further questions.

D.E.L.A. is also on the Board of Directors for the newly formed Friends of Penobscot Bay.

Marketing Partnerships Mean Extended Reach for Maine Lobster

Marketing partnerships with com- panies that have compatible products, messaging and customers help to extend Maine Lobster’s marketing dollars and overall reach. This summer, Boston Beer ran a successful marketing program that presented the perfect pairing of Maine Lob- ster and Samuel Adams Summer Ale. The promotion included point of sale materials and cross-merchandising coupons as well as public relations and advertising support. The promotion was executed in approxi- mately 400 stores throughout New England. Over 8,000 Maine Lobsters were tagged with special promotional knuckle tags.

Maine Lobster Promotion Council was invited to co-sponsor Boston Beer’s ‘Best of Maine’ event at the brewery in Boston on October 15. Boston Beer holds this annual event to show itsappreciation to commer- cial customers, including restaurant and baroperators throughout the state. It was a great opportunity for the MLPC to meet with Boston Beer representatives that went out and sold the marketing program, as well as foodservice and retail customers who ran the promotion.

At the brewery, Maine Lobster Chef

Ambassador Wilfred Beriauwas on hand to serve his delicious lobster rolls to approx- imately 175 enthusiastic attendees, while Acting Executive Director Marianne LaC- roix dished out Hancock Gourmet’s Spruce Head Smoked Scallop Lobster Bisque. Lob- ster fi sherman Craig Stewart from Long Is- land circulated through the event, providing authentic Maine ambience. Event attendees had the opportunity to tour the brewery and sample special brews. The Maine Lobster table was one of the most popular stops along the tour, with many repeat customers. MLPC will continue to look for op- portunities to partner with compatible companies.Be on the look out this winter for a print advertising campaign promoting Champagne that uses Maine Lobster as an example of another product with a unique provenance.

concerned with the well-being of our future also. The board wants to be sure that water quality, as one example, is still healthy for our marine life and underwater vegetation, such as seaweed. How much decline of certain species or what are some of the new “foreign” species that have entered our ecosystem since the previous winter was warmer than usual? These are all concerns for everyone along our Maine coastline, especially those of us that make our living on the water. Brooks Trap Mill has been very generous and is helping to design, along with my husband, Mike, a cage that will protect an underwater camera. We want to eventually be able to “trawl” the camera so it can be moved underwater and see what is happening on the bottom of our harbors and tributaries. We want to thank Garth at Brooks Trap Mill for his help with working with us! They are also donating the materials and labor to help with this project. They even said that it was a pleasure to work with us…..imagine that! In all honesty, it has been a real pleasure to work with them, too. We all feel that this is an important project. The next meeting of D.E.L.A. will be held on Thursday, November 8th

at Jasper’s

in Ellsworth at 6:00 p.m. Come along and say “Hi” to our new President, Hilton Turner and the Board of Directors. Marianne LaCroix, the Acting Executive Director of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council will also be at the meeting. Please bring along your concerns and new memberships! We always have D.E.L.A. membership forms at the meetings. To make it a little more convenient, we are now taking Master Card and Visa and trying to make improvements as we go and hope that it is working well for everyone.

See you there, Sheila
