TRAINING SOLUTIONS FOR THE MODERN HORSEMAN


A display of skill typically requires willing feet and a yield to pressure. Assuming there are no significant trust or re- spect issues, failing to back up and rearing is due to an in- consistent or absent skill. Fortunately, this lack of response is solved by a simple, straightorward plan of action.


WHAT MOTIVATES HIM? It is difficult relating to someone who has a hidden agenda. Without knowing what is mo-


tivating his actions, you are leſt in the dark. When you teach a horse, be aware of the primary motivator influencing him: peace. When you do not keep this in the forefront of your mind, your ability to teach diminishes. Peace? What does this mean? It means a horse is wired in such a way that he does not like to


be pressured or hassled; he instinctually looks for ways to avoid disruptive stimuli. Examples in training are: tapping whip, bumping leg, engaged bit, clucking voice, imposing posture and so forth. Tese types of stimuli are bothersome but not painful. As soon as pain occurs, the horse becomes defensive and quality teaching stops. So, keeping this simple, what is the motivating factor behind a backing-up request? Bit pressure. Te horse does not want the bit to be engaged in his mouth. By creating a simple
