Region 12 responding to community needs, tragedy In late October, PEF members
downstate were horrified to hear of a motorist and a Nassau County police officer who were allegedly gunned down by a parolee. The tragedy spurred members in PEF
Region 12 to take action on behalf of the slain motorist, Raymond Facey, a member of Teamsters Local 282, who had pulled onto the shoulder of the Cross Island Parkway and stopped to talk to his
daughter on his cellphone when he was shot. Region 12 Coordinator Connie Batts
said they will donate $200 of the annual Region 12 Scholarship to a benefit fund established by Local 282 and the Nassau- Suffolk Building Trades Council for Facey’s four children. Region 12 also plans to donate baby

Help PEF fight parole-counselor title merger PEF is working hard to help members
affected by the state’s decision to consolidate the job titles of prison parole officers with those of prison counselors. PEF President Susan Kent told delegates
to the union’s convention in October she is “very concerned” about the consolidation. “It’s a recipe for disaster to put the
duties of these two titles together,” Kent said, noting that counselors are responsible for helping inmates meet the requirements for parole eligibility, and the parole officers have been responsible for informing the state Parole Board of any risks associated with the prospective parole
of inmates. Kent said PEF has gone to court to try to
head off the title consolidation and has also appealed it to the state Civil Service Commission. However, the commission has not yet added the appeal to its agenda. “I’ve never seen such a quick
consolidation of titles as this was,” Kent said. “It’s very, very important for our members who are affected by this to document the problems it raises. You must give us the information we need to fight it.” Members should give that information to
their PEF field representative. – Sherry Halbrook
