Hotel extension plan

A PLANNING application has been lodged for a 19-bedroom hotel annex at the Weald of Kent Golf Course in Maidstone Road, Headcorn. Applicant Patrick Edwards

had planned a 32-bedroom de- velopment, but following pre- application discussions he reduced the scale to ensure the eaves height matches the exist- ing clubhouse. A hotel opened at the golf course in 2002. A supporting statement said: “The clubhouse is popular for wedding parties and guests often wish to stay overnight. Golf societies have

similar aspirations and fre- quently would prefer to come by coach rather than in cars. At present, there are not enough rooms in the Headcorn Lodge to cater for a full coach comple- ment. Proposed planswill cater for this demand. “The bedroom annex is de- signed to match, in colour and materials, the design of the ex- isting clubhouse. It is posi- tioned at the heart of the clubhouse site and integrated with both appearance and exist- ing facilities.” Maidstone Council will deter- mine the application.

Business school opens in town MAYOR of Maidstone, Cllr Rodd Nelson-Gracie, has opened a new business school in the centre of town. The Young Entrepreneurs Business School is the most recent course to be launched by Jubilee Training Centre. The business school, based at 7 Ashford Road, was launched

at the beginning of September and aims to equip its students with the key principles for business and life. School head Chris Williams said: “We want to see a genera-

tion rise up within the business field whose motive is not solely personal gain, but transformation within their community.”

Protected lime trees must stay VICTORIA Field has been told she cannot fell two protected lime trees that she says are “causing amajor compromise” to her enjoy- ment of her home in Yalding. Maidstone Council refused her planning application because the

two trees at Church House in the High Street “contribute to the vi- sual amenity and landscape quality of the area and their removal would degrade such amenity”. The applicant had offered to replant two silver birch treeswithin

the garden of Church House, but further from the garage and Church Cottage. The supporting statement said: “The trees are very dominant and

this species casts a dense shade. This, together with their orienta- tion, mean that when in leaf there is little direct sunlight to the rear garden of Church Cottage; and little light within the rear rooms of that property. In addition there is mildew damage to the rear walls of the property. “The trees cause amajor compromise to the enjoyment of the gar-

den and indoor space by the owners of Church Cottage.” The council’s decision notice added that there was no evidence to suggest the trees had defects or caused the mildew.
