Tree
festival set to be a
first for village
ST DAY is to hold its first Christmas tree festival.
It will see 40 Christ- mas trees displayed at the parish church, the Methodist and old parish churches over the first two weekends in December. Linda Barker, who is helping to organise the festival, said: ‘The aim is to enable com- munity groups and businesses within the community to deco- rate a tree and pro- mote themselves, and additionally, to raise some funds for local, charitable organisa- tions.’
The churches will be supplying hot lunches, brunches and afternoon teas during the festival.
Concert
The organisers are also hoping to arrange a concert, although a firm date has not yet been set.
News Enterprising day
PUPILS from Bodriggy Academy in Hayle took part in the first Primary Enterprise Day at the school organised by Corn- wall Learning Education Business Partnership. With support from Mr B’s, Salt, Children’s Uni- versity, TRAC services IT West and the school gov- ernors the pupils formed into companies for the day to look at ways to en- courage more children to have school dinners. The pupils had lots of ideas about how to pro- mote school dinners to both children and par- ents. Together they pro- duced leaflets and posters as well as lots of delicious menu ideas.
At the end of the day the pupils presented their ideas to the business peo- ple and the Dinners R Us ‘company’ won the prize for having the best ideas.
Support
The trees that will be sited in the parish church will be large trees, more than 16ft tall, which the organ- isers hope to source lo- cally.
If you grow Christ- mas trees or can put them in contact with a local supplier contact Linda Barker on 01872 870256 or smeagleand
precious@hotmail.co. uk
The organisers would also like to bor- row bases suitable for the larger trees; again please contact Mrs Barker if you are able to help.
‘The Enterprise Day provided the pupils with the opportunity to make real choices and decisions in an issue that is rele- vant to them at school,’ said Kate Whetter, educa- tion projects manager at Cornwall Education Busi- ness Partnership. ‘Key to the success of the day was the fantastic support from the local business community,’ said David May, head- teacher at Bodriggy Acad- emy.
‘The opportunity for
Year 6 children to work on a business project, supported so positively by business people in a competitive environment, was an example of what real learning can look like.’

Groom for improvement
ANIMAL management stu- dents from Duchy College Rosewarne have been get- ting to grips with the art of dog grooming and even brought their own dogs in for some pampering in the college’s purpose-built dog grooming salon.
The students are learning how to dog groom as part of the Animal Management Extended Diploma Level 3 course.
Over the term they will learn about brushing, bathing, clipping and trim- ming, and how different coat types and breeds re- quire different shampoos and methods. Logan Ody, from Re- druth, was practising his blow-drying skills with Diesel the springer spaniel. Logan said: ‘We’ve never done anything like this be- fore or used any of the equipment so it’s really fun.
‘It’s quite unusual but I’m enjoying it and learn- ing lots of new things.
‘I didn’t realise that you shouldn’t use some sham- poos on certain coat types, I think Diesel’s enjoyed it!’ Megan Ivey, from Hayle, and Carina Orsman, from Truro, were tackling the big task of brushing Becky the German Shepherd’s thick coat!
Interesting
Megan said: ‘It’s really interesting; you use differ- ent skills depending on the breed of dog.
‘The course is great, we get to work with lots of ani- mals and learn all sorts of skills which can be applied in industry.’
Carina added: ‘I’ve got a golden retriever puppy who I’m going to bring in to be groomed, he’ll certainly love all the attention!’ If you would like to get your dog groomed then call the college on 01209 722100, please note there is a small charge for each dog depend- ing on their size.
