he future is now, and it’s new media. It’s designing and developing mobile apps from a mobile device without having to know programming, as well as mobile content, customization, platforms and technical support for mobile devices. Or, it’s the acoustic design used in mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones. New media products and technology allow customers to watch and control their living room TV shows at any time, from any location, using internet-connected PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones. The world’s need for instant, on-demand access means jobs and opportunity on the Internet, websites, computer multimedia, video games, CD-ROMS, DVDs and publications that contain technologies that enable digital interactivity.


Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine spoke to a technology architect who builds automated, scalable infra- structure for fast-growing Internet applications.

targeted promotions as well as nutrition and health tips to customers. Clients include restaurant chains Subway, Silver- greens and El Gallo Giro. Beyond being engaged in every- thing from design to implementation and maintenance, Agui- lar also works on architecture, client-side communications and developing point-of-sale apps for clients. Prior to joining SmartReceipt in 2008, he spent five years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory [JPL] creating specialized software. Helpful to oth- ers in his field, Aguilar has spoken to fellow techs in his area about AppScale, Google App Engine, and the research that SmartReceipt has done. Aguilar was a cum laude graduate in computer science with a minor in electronic arts.


Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology (HE&IT): What does your company do? Roberto Aguilar: Baremetal is building automated, scalable infrastructure for fast-growing Internet applications. This idea stemmed from a problem I was facing at my previous job. Cloud-based infrastructure allowed the company to quickly grow to a point, but then encountered scalability issues not easily solved in the cloud and cost prohibitive with existing
