rairie summers can be blazingly hot as the temperatures rise and the sun heats everything in its rays. While open decks


are lovely, they can quickly become very warm and impossible to enjoy.


This is exactly what happened to Frances and Jack Vandermeulen, of Carman Mani- toba. They enjoy spending their leisure time on their deck located off their dining room. “The deck always used to get so hot that you


could hardly walk on it,” says Frances of just this drawback. “Jack and I enjoy our morning coffee out there.” Other meals were problem atic as the heat built up during the day. “He is not a sun man and although I enjoy sitting in the sun, it can get too hot even for me.” The couple had been considering some


form of shade option for the space but didn’t want to compromise the light or increase the temperature.


Then their son came home and mentioned that a friend of his, who had just moved here from Ontario, was selling a potential solution, Frances was at first bit skeptical, but after viewing the product first hand at the spring home show in Winnipeg, she became a con- vert.
