Creating curb appeal!


The tear-shaped garden plot in the front entrance is a real eye-catcher. By Cindy McKay


ilary and Paul Joudrey loved their home but when it came to their front yard, they felt like they were stuck in a time warp. Their wish was to turn the area into an inviting useable space where they could socialize and have their young daughter enjoy playing with friends. Paul van Gils and his company, Vangils Landscape Design and Construction, was recommended to the couple by the contrac- tor who built their sunroom. Upon their first meeting, Paul quickly picked up on the couple’s concerns and set out to work with them on their vision. “Paul was the fourth or fifth person we spoke to and we knew immediately he was different. He never told us what couldn’t be done, just discussed the options,” says Hilary. “We wanted to change the appearance

His godfather owned a land- scape business in Montreal and as soon as he was old enough to tag along, he learned how to create intriguing, quality landscape projects that projected his high standard of workmanship, value and integrity. Vangils Landscaping Design and Construction has hit the Winnipeg industry by storm full time for the last three seasons. With more than 20 years in the industry, his team leaves be- hind original, breathtaking properties and very satisfied customers. “We created a large enough stone patio wherin we could incorporate lots of interest- ing areas for plantings that can be enjoyed from the patio, but maintain good visibility of children playing. The lines are fluid to soften the incline of the properties’ grade, and to create a soothing, tranquil environ- ment,” says Paul of the design goal. The concrete stairs were replaced with a


unique gradual concept that creates a fluid visual. Each step has a different line curva- ture following in an ‘S’ shape pattern that
