2012 NAPT AWARD WINNERS

Annual NAPT Awards Recognize Industry’s Very Best

One of the most anticipated NAPT Summit events is the awards ban- quet, now in its 38th year. Associa- tion members and vendor partners gather to give a well-deserved pat on the back to several student transporters for going above and beyond, a tenet of an industry

dedicated to providing the utmost in student safety as well as education to

both children and professionals nationwide. “Te NAPT awards banquet is a great opportunity to

recognize our peers and enjoy the fellowship of colleagues from across the nation and beyond,” said Peter Lawrence, director of transportation at Fairport (N.Y.) Central School District and last year’s NAPT Distinguished Service Award winner. “NAPT is an international organization that allows transportation professionals the opportunity to network and share best practices that ultimately help to improve student safety on our school buses. “I look forward to learning and sharing with the attend- ees at this year’s NAPT Summit,” added Lawrence, who was also the recipient of the STN Leadership Award given in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2008. While there is neither a recipient of the NAPT Distin- guished Service Award nor an inductee into the NAPT Hall of Fame this year, several deserving awards remain, and were handed out this week. Heather Handschin of Spot- sylvania (Va.) County Public Schools won the Continuing Education Award sponsored by Tomas Built Buses. Meanwhile, Columbus County (Ohio) Schools won

the NAPT Driver Trainer Award sponsored by IC Bus. Victoria Creech of Orange County (Fla.) Public Schools took home the NAPT Special Needs Transportation Award sponsored by Sure-Lok. Dysart (Ariz.) Unified School District won the esteemed NAPT Larson Quality Award, named after Leland E.G. Larson, the former owner and president of School Bus Services, Inc., in Gresham, Ore. Te award that bears his name honors school districts committed to improving the quality of their student transportation services. Launi Schmutz, director of transportation for Washington County School District in St. George, Utah, led a four-person NAPT evaluation team. She said she was honored to perform the peer review as the school district was able to accurately, completely and immedi- ately document anything NAPT asked for in terms of Key Performance Indicators and how they are utilized, operational processes, leadership initiatives, driver training and documentation. Essentially, Schmutz said the district proved how its transportation services go “above and beyond” every day. “Tey were prepared. Tey’d didn’t make (anything)

up, they produced and they handed it over right then and there,” said Schmutz, a former director-at-large on the NAPT Board. “Tere was also not one person that was more outstanding than another. Tey were all in sync. Tat was really surprising to me. Tey spoke the same language, had the same goals, the same vision.” 
