Post office battle VILLAGERS at Teston have rallied round in a bid to save their post office. The village hall was so packed for a public meeting that some people had to stand outside and listen through open windows. The meeting was called after popular sub-postmaster John Zygnant an- nounced that he would be closing up on October 10 as he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Residents suggested several short-term measures such as a temporary sub-post office at the village hall or amobile post office van. The parish council promised to investigate. The nearest post offices are inWateringbury or Barming.
Jail for ‘insider’ robber AMANwho robbed his employers ofmore than £26,000 has been jailed for three years and four months. DNA samples linked Andrew Rapo (32)
of Pattenden Gardens, East Peckham, to the burglary at the catering company he worked for in Aylesford, which was robbed by masked men in January this year.
Maidstone Crown Court heard that Rapo
was one of two masked men who broke into the company and assaulted a security guard before stealing £26,500 in cash and cheques. Rapo was arrested after a col- league reported a conversation he had with the defendant about the firm’s secu- rity arrangements. DC Claire Hammond from Kent Police
said: “This was a frightening episode for the security guardwho was tied up and as- saulted.”
