Pupils get taste of France on first trip to twin town

FOR the first time since Snod- land became twinned with Moyeuvre-Grande 26 years ago, pupils from Holmesdale Tech- nology College have visited fam- ilies in the town, in north-east France.

Secretary of Snodland Twin-

ning Association, Veronica Tipp, said the visit was the group vis- ited the famous Maginot Line, which is close to the town, the Pompidou Centre art gallery at Metz and the site of a WWI bat- tle and memorial at Verdun. Gifts were exchanged at a

party in the Town Hall. Craig Bailey, Ryan Ford, Daisy

Townson, Jessica Worsfold, Kayleigh Mealing and Emily Simpson joined languages teacher, Angela Riley for the trip. Angela said: “All six students agreed it was an amazing expe- rience which has had a really positive impact on their knowl- edge and understanding of French language and culture. “We are looking forward to re- ceiving French visitors from Moyeuvre-Grande to our school next year.”

THE deputy mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Howard Rogers, made his first official visit to Snodland to hand out trophies to members of the town’s chess club. The evening started with a game between George Hollands and Rob Thompson to de- cide the winner of the Challenge Cup. Treasurer Neil Miners explained: “The moves were transferred to FIDE Master, Steve Giddins, in the main club room who analysed each move and gave a commen- tary of the match. “It proved to be an exciting game with the advantage changing between the two play- ers throughout, with George Holland even- tually winning.”

(‘A’ League, club champion, Speed Chess Champion and Challenge Cup winner); Bob Fenn (‘B’League); Brian Stock (‘C’ League); Rev Hugh Broadbent (Most improved player); David Lettington (Best game of the year).

Chairman, Bob Fenn said 2012 had been

an excellent season for the club. David Fowler had captained a team to victory in the Harvey Cup and Nick Allen had captained Snodland’s Intro Cup in the Kent Chess As- sociation tournaments. He thanked everybody who had con- tributed to the club’s success and looked forward to another successful year in 2013.

SNODLAND’S community minibus is to be sold, due to lack of use. Provided by the Snodland Partnership

about 10 years ago, it was initially well used by local organisations and individu- als. “It is very regrettable,” said partnership member Peter Rimmer. “Unfortunately we have got to the stage where the mainte- nance and running costs have out- stripped its use. “It would appear that on a lot of occa-

sions people are booking up outings and shows that include transport in the price of the ticket. We have decided that the amount it costs us can be better used on other things in the community.”
