DARTMOUTH CARING IS SELLING CARDS FEATURING AN EXCLUSIVE DESIGN BY INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTIST SIMON DREW
Simon Drew, who has been based in Dartmouth for more than 30 years, has agreed to provide a special image for the charity’s annual Christmas cards. His design is particularly suited to Dartmouth, and is full of his trademark humour. Simon agreed to donate a design after he was asked by Dartmouth Caring’s manager and coordinator Alison Stocks (pictured with Simon) to help raise funds for the charity. His art, normally employing clever wordplay or simply silly puns, is famous across the world - he has published numerous books. Simon said: “It made a lovely change to do a Christmas card that is specifically about Dartmouth: I don’t often get the chance to do that. So when Dartmouth Caring asked if I would do one I jumped at the opportunity as it is such a good local organisation. So many people benefit from DC and I’m sure they could do with some extra funds!” Alison said the charity was lucky to have his support. “Simon is such a widely renowned artist we are delighted he is supporting us,” she said. “When he said yes to providing an image we were over the moon, and when it arrived we were even happier as it is funny, Dartmouth-focused and beautifully crafted – it’s a wonderful card!” Packs of the cards will be on sale in the Tourist Information Centre and other local outlets plus the Dartmouth Caring office and website

DARTMOUTH ACADEMY STUDENTS CELEBRATE IMPROVED GCSE RESULTS

The number of students from Dartmouth Academy achieving the key benchmark of five or more A* - C GCSE grades rose to 93 per cent, up from 68 per cent in 2011: a 25 per cent increase. This is the second year in a row Dartmouth Academy has posted a record score for this measure. Maths saw big improvements: jumping from 32 per cent achieving A*- C to 59 per cent in 2012. Science saw a similar jump: from 42 per cent of students achieving two A*-C grades to 85 per cent. PE saw all passes in GCSE and BTEC courses rise from 47 to 99 per cent. Nick Hindmarsh, Principal at Dartmouth Academy, said: “We’ve had a fantastic year here at Dartmouth Academy and I am delighted with the students’ results. The 25 per cent growth in the number of students achieving five or more A* - C GCSE grades is a credit to the hard work put in by our students and staff throughout the year. “We said after last year’s results that we would see significant improvements this year, and that has been borne out.”
