HANG ON TIGHT, WINDOWS 8 IS HERE! M

icrosoft’s new operating system, Windows 8 will be released on October 26th

and it’s

not a gentle upgrade! Microsoft says that this is their most radical new version of Windows since Windows 95 - this is “Windows re-imagined and reinvented”. Designed for Touch Screens Windows 8 has been designed for touch screen devices – one operating system that can work on smart phones, tablets and traditional computers. The desktop as we know it, is gone and has been replaced with the “Metro Desktop” - big bold panels on the desktop that you can tap and swipe. Underneath all of that, you’ll find the traditional Windows that we have all become used to over the past decade. However users will have to switch to this mode. Faster with Better Security There’s plenty to like about Windows 8. It’s quicker to start and has much better security. It can synchronise settings across all your devices and the File History tool is perfect for simple backups. It’s fast and includes some excellent repair options. Microsoft has launched their own App Store so you can download a variety of Apps straight onto the Windows 8 Metro desktop.

Be Prepared for a Steep learning Curve What really matters this time, though, isn’t

just what Microsoft has added to the Windows mix - it’s what it has changed or taken away. Windows 8 has undergone a major redesign which sees the Start menu scrapped, the desktop demoted, and years of interface conventions thrown away. If you upgrade to Windows

8, then be prepared for a very steep learning curve. Is it Worth the Upgrade? Windows 8 is a big, bold upgrade. At the time

of writing this article, the upgrade price from Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 is quoted at just £25. On the whole, people don’t like change and Windows 8 may be a step too far for many computer users. To learn more, visit Microsoft’s web site at www.microsoft.com.
