ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many events and activities have been scheduled to inform, entertain and educate the public on preven- tion, self-care, what to do, what not to do, what to eat, what not to eat, and the list goes on. Someone recently suggested that we change the name to National Breast Care Awareness Month so that by removing the word “cancer” from the title, we begin, at least symbolically, to remove the name and the power of the killer disease. This reminds me of the Harry Potter stories, in which they

called Lord Voldemort “he who shall not be named” so as not to empower him by saying or calling out his name. October 3 marks the four-year anniversary of the death of my friend Mona, who died after her second battle with breast cancer. Dead at 47. Where is the fairness in that? It certainly leaves the rest of us wondering, why her? Who’s next? How does this happen? What can we do about it? For me, and for many of the readers of Natural Awakenings, the answer (or, at least, part of the answer) lies in our environment, our self-care products and our food. I challenge you to read the book Not Just a Pretty Face and not wonder what deadly chemicals are finding their way into your body, including parabens in deodorant, lead in lipstick, mercury in tooth fillings, pesticides in food, antibiotics in meat and much more. But it’s not just what it’s doing to you. These traces of carcinogens and lead and

mercury also get passed on from you to your unborn children, and grandchildren. We’re learning more every day about the toxins and poisons that fill our air, our pantries and our medicine cabinets. The rise of allergies, asthma, gluten sensitivity, ADHD, autism, obesity and cancer in the population is often attributed to our food and our environment. Many people think that making a small change here and there is too miniscule to bother with, but actually, the opposite is true. Small, dedicated changes in diet and environment are the ways of changing your sail to accommodate your new destination. You can start by educating yourself at this year’s 11th Annual Living with Breast Cancer Educational Conference on October 6 (see pg. 8 for more information). This annual conference is for providers, caregivers, survivors and anyone else interested in learning more about breast cancer. This all-day event will showcase speakers and pres- ent a selection of vendors and activists who support the eradication of breast cancer. If breast cancer is too specific for you, consider attending the two-day Healthy Life Expo, the largest health and wellness expo in the Midwest. This event takes place October 20 and 21 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. With more than 200 exhibitors, plus free seminars and demonstrations, you are sure to find something that will help you improve your health. Plus, Natural Awakenings will have a table at the expo and we would love to meet you! Please stop by and introduce yourself.

In Peace and Wellness,
