What’s New PENG Award 2012

• Would you like to win a fully funded place at the BAPEN meeting December 2012 incorporating the Annual PEN Group study day?

• Do you carry out audits, have an interesting case study to share, are you innovative in dietetic practice? • Would you like a chance to showcase your success? • Are you able to demonstrate measuring a dietetic outcome?

If you answer “YES” and are a current PEN Group member* – then why not apply for the PENG Award 2012? Applications for PENG Award 2012 are now open, deadline 31st August 2012.

WHY should you apply? In recognition of how difficult it can be to obtain funding to attend study days, the PEN Group committee, working collaboratively with our colleagues in industry, have designed the 2012 PENG Award to provide four fully funded places to the BAPEN Meeting December 2012 (including the PENG study days), allowing more dietitians to win and help to support your attendance at such an important meeting.

WHAT is the PENG 2012 Award? This year’s PENG Award, supported by Fresenius Kabi, Abbott Nutrition and Nutricia, focuses on submissions demonstrating use of dietetic outcome measures in nutritional support. To be considered for an Award we invite you to tell us about your best practice; show us what measures you use in demonstrating dietetic outcomes, outline how

you communicate this to your fellow healthcare colleagues and demonstrate whether this has helped secure funding for any dietetic posts. Have you carried out audits which would be useful to share? Have you got a patient case study which illustrates the importance of dietetic outcome measures? Have you carried out any research in the area of dietetic outcomes in nutritional support? – If yes, we would like to hear from you…

WHO can apply? PEN Group are looking for FOUR dietitians who are members of the PEN Group* who can demonstrate measuring dietetic outcomes in nutritional support. We are looking for original contributions and sharing best practice to help us, as a Specialist Group, demonstrate and communicate the clinical benefits of dietetic intervention in the area of nutritional support.

HOW can you apply? Simply write a short summary of your audit, or innovative practice or case study, to show how you have measured dietetic outcomes and integrated this into improving patient care. Your submission should be in the form of an abstract with title, authors, introduction/background, results, discussion, conclusion and references on one page of A4. Submit along with your contact details including your PEN Group NUMBER to the PEN Group education email address: education.peng@bda.uk.com by August 31st 2012. All applications will be judged according to set criteria and the lucky winners will be notified by the end of September 2012. We will hold the Award ceremony at the

main PEN Group meeting in December where the winners will have an opportunity to present their work.

SAGE Awards – Winners 2012 SAGE Awards, a national awards programme in gastroenterology, announces its winners for 2012

The SAGE Award 2012 (Shire Award for Gastrointestinal Excellence) first place has been jointly presented to two projects for their work which has shown considerable excellence in gastrointestinal care. The Mersey School of Endoscopy and the Northern Nutrition Network (NNN) will each receive a grant of £7,500 for furthering and enhancing the development of their respective project.

The Mersey School of Endoscopy’s winning

entry was The Sustainable Endoscopy Training project in Malawi which aims to improve the services and procedures of endoscopy in this resource limited setting, developing locally relevant training courses and procedures, creating a training hub and extending this out to regional hospitals.

The Northern Nutrition Network was

ultimately improve patient care. The NNN have carried out regional audits of clinical practice, implemented guidelines and patient pathways, developed an annual training day and fostered multidisciplinary relationships.

Dr Paul O'Toole, Consultant Gastroenterologist,

Director of the Mersey School of Endoscopy, Liverpool, commented: “We are delighted to receive this award and to be recognised for our commitment to improving endoscopy services in Malawi. Endoscopy staff in Malawi are now better equipped with training resources, and this award will help us to continue partnering and enabling them to provide an improved level of patient care, greatly needed in this low- resource region.”

Dr Nicholas Thompson, Consultant Gastroenterologist based at the Freeman Hospital, which is part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, developing the NNN project, stated: “We would like to thank the judging panel for awarding the NNN this award for

all its efforts within Nutrition care in the north of England. The multidisciplinary team (MDT) has worked hard to ensure the delivery of standardised and improved patient care. The grant will enable the Network to run MDT development courses to enable Trusts to develop properly functioning nutrition MDTs, essential to delivering high quality patient care. We will also be able to carry out a prospective, region-wide audit of Parenteral nutrition within hospital.”

A team led by Dr Harry Dalton at The Royal

Cornwall Hospital in Truro was awarded a grant of £3,000 for their project which helps identify patients with low risk upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage through th e use of an innovative risk-assessment tool.
