It has been a busy few months since the last edition of In Touch. In May we announced the details of this year's PEN Group Awards 2012 – dietetic outcomes in nutritional support – see details on page 3. We are encouraging all PEN Group members to apply. The top FOUR submissions will be awarded a bursary to attend December's BAPEN meeting, which will also include the Annual PEN Group Meeting. Details of how to apply are on page 3. Winners will be announced at the end of Sept/ beginning October. PEN Group are also


delighted to announce that Vera Todorovic, Vice Chair of PEN Group, has been awarded the prestigious BDA Ibex Award 2012. Many will know Vera through the significant contributions she has made within the PEN Group and BAPEN over many years. The Ibex Award gives recognition to Vera's leadership within the dietetic profession, acknowledges the numerous educational activities Vera has been involved in and, also, her work promoting the unique skills of the dietetic profession in delivering high quality nutritional support. An

The NNNG had a successful symposium at DDF last month which triggered much discussion. Dr S Cooper, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Dudley, and Chair of BAPEN Clinical Guidance and Education Committee, started the proceedings with an excellent presentation discussing refeeding syndrome. This was followed by Joe Colby, a Nutrition Nurse Specialist in Coventry, who looked at the issues that arise when assessing a patient for a PEG insertion, highlighting issues that we could all identify with. The final session of this symposium was presented by Linda Warriner, Nutrition Nurse Specialist and

With DDF behind us, it’s now time to look


ahead to our own Conference which is only three months away! It’s going to be bigger than previous NNNG Conferences and will include support from BAPEN’s Core Groups. The programme has been finalised, details of hotels and car parking are now


available on the website, and a significant number of places have already been booked. We are striving to ensure that this year’s NNNG Conference improves on the excellent feedback received following last year’s Conference. By the time this is published the second of the


NNNG Good Practice Guidelines – Changing of a Balloon Gastrostomy Tube (BGT) into the Stomach for Adults and Children – will have been released. Work has just commenced on the next set of guidelines addressing ongoing use of nasogastric tubes. All published guidelines are available on the members’ area of the NNNG website.

the newly launched 4th edition of the PENG Pocket Guide to Clinical Nutrition has been nominated for one of the Complete Nutrition Awards, thank you to those who voted, we now eagerly await the results which will be announced in the September issue of Complete Nutrition Magazine. Work has now commenced on new sections of


the PENG Pocket Guide to include nutrition support in COPD, pancreatitis, bariatrics plus a section on fluid. Look out for progress reports on these sections later this year. This year's PEN Group Clinical Update Course


was successfully run in June hosted at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. For those dietitians wishing to advance their skills in nutrition support a short summary to whet your appetite for next year can be found on page 6. PEN Group recognise the difficulty dietitians face in securing funding for courses, PEN Group are therefore pleased to announce the availability of FIVE fully funded places for the 2013 PEN Group Clinical Update course (worth up to £950).
