Broadcast TECH
CONTENTS THE PAST AND THE FUTURE
Restoration is an area where the past and present collide, with the most up-to-date kit and software used to reinvigorate and repair footage that, in the case of one of the programmes featured on page 26, dates all the way back to World War I. One of the reasons given for the rise in demand for

restored content is the continuing growth of HD channels, and the shift away from SD is a topic that emerged as a key consid- eration in our Tech nology Survey, with broadcasters marking it out as their main technology challenge. The bulk of this issue of Broadcast TECH is taken up with our annual examination of technology concerns, so thank you to the 300-plus of you who took part and shared your thoughts on which areas are most important to you and your business. It will be no surprise to many that another of the key areas is storage. The knock-on effects of file-based acquisition are, of course, being felt strongly in post, with the storage of rushes and archived content a cause for concern for many in the industry. We look at some of the latest storage solutions aimed at addressing those changing needs with a feature on nearline systems. To paraphrase Sumners technical director Brian Hardman, where tape was an instant archive, with files you need more levels of storage. And with shooting ratios on the rise, it’s certain to be an area that will feature prominently in our technology survey for many years to come.
