Firms need to work on their customer care
SIR – How much I agree with Mr Walsh and his observations on the trade and the auction rooms! (The thoughts of an obsessive collector and ex-shop owner... Letters, ATG No 2050). I have been an avid collector for many
years and can endorse all he says. Recently I considered selling some
of my clock collection at auction. In my home town we have an offi ce of one of the region’s ‘leading auction rooms’. I telephoned in normal business hours but got no answer. I emailed asking for details of their
transport costs etc but have still had no reply. Are these people for real? Have they
no need to consider their customers? I will probably sell my items myself on
eBay or some similar system. The cavalier attitude of the antiques auction trade has really put me off using them.

letters to the editor Nothing is new when it comes to these alerts over forged coins
SIR – Warning about the forgery of antiquities in Italy in the 19th century, an old amateur gave this warning about coins: “There is nothing for it but to give up collecting them because to my mind it has become impossible to tell the false from the true.” (Memories of an old collector, Michael Tyszkiewicz, London 1898, page 178.) After the failure of a highly professional dealer to detect the forgery of three well-known coins – even to the extent
of taking a high risk in acquiring them (from Italy!) – it seems nothing has changed (see News, ATG No 2050, July 21). It would certainly be instructive to know how these forgeries were fi nally detected.

Naval gazing: a similar sight
SIR – I thought that you might be interested in the similarities between the Moore Allen & Innocent item pictured on page 16 of Auction Reports ATG No 2050 (July 21) and the item in the Nelson Collection at Lloyds of London shown here.
