and sales at the top end of this bracket included a pen and watercolour of The Colosseum from the Palatine Hill (pictured here) sold for the asking price of £50,000 and a watercolour over pencil of the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, sold for £25,000. Crispian Riley-Smith, MDL founder

and organiser, sold over 20 of the drawings, prints and paintings from the collection of Professor Raymond E. Pahl, FBA (1935-2011), including a Venetian drawing by Jacopo Negretti (1480-1528), entitled Palma Il Giovane, 1621, to a US collector, and Studies of Men and Women in Arab, Medieval and other Costumes, a pen and ink by the Circle of Melchior Lorck (c.1527-1594), to a British collector. Meanwhile, on the contemporary side,

A few doors along, fellow Duke Street resident Rafael Valls, who this year had an exhibition of Monochrome Masterworks dedicated to grisaille and brunaille painting from 1550-1800, felt that visitor numbers had increased on last year. Newcomer Angus Haldane said:

“As a first-time participant, it has been a great success. Our exhibition has seen a steady flow of visitors, including many new private clients, and feedback has been really positive. Sales include a painting to a descendant of the sporting artist Charles Cooper Henderson.” Another first-timer, Theo Johns Fine

Art, sold three paintings after a busy first weekend, one of which was an 1885 oil sketch of a beggar woman by the Dutch Javanese painter Jan Toorop (1858-1928).

1 How long have you been dealing? 40 years.

2 What was your first job? Art teacher in Australia.

3 The best and worst thing about being a dealer? Best, discovering a really exciting artwork! Worst, not buying a great work because it seemed too expensive.

4 What has been you best buy and your biggest mistake? Best buy, Roses of Heliogabalus by Alma Tadema – not most profitable, but most memorable. Biggest mistake, dumping the 1929 Buick I bought for £15 while still at school.

5 What is your dream object? 1935 Alfa Romeo.

6 What is the biggest threat, in your opinion, to the trade at the moment? The introduction of Artist’s Resale Right.

7 Guiltiest pleasure? Trying to beat my son’s score on our vintage pinball machine.

8 Any advice for those starting out in the trade? Befriend a good established dealer.

9 Michelin Star or greasy spoon? My wife’s cooking – she warrants her own Michelin star.

10 What gadget would you be lost without? Tweezers, for my collection of Chinese stamps.
