NEARLY one in fi ve of all sales by LAPADA dealers are now online, according to the fi ne art and antique dealer association’s latest survey, covering 2011. That’s almost twice the global average
and just one of the statistics polled in a wide-ranging study that shows members are relatively bullish about prospects for business in 2012. To appreciate how far things have
come with the internet, LAPADA’s 2007 survey polled only 7% of sales being made online. Having said that, there were still 21% of the respondents in 2011 who made no sales online at all.
The survey, conducted by international
art market analysts Arts Economics, secured replies from over 15% of the membership, which stands at around 550, and found that, on average, sales enjoyed a gross profi t margin of 37%. Most encouragingly, an overwhelming
majority held a positive outlook for the year ahead, with over half expecting sales to at least match those in 2011. While 28% of respondents anticipated somewhat higher or signifi cantly higher sales, only 6% feared signifi cantly lower sales for the period. Business at the top end had held up
since 2010, with 6.4% of respondents reporting total sales of between £3m and £5m for both years, while those enjoying sales of between £1m and £3m rose from 10.3% to 17.9%. Below this, however, average turnover fell, with 10% fewer dealers taking between £500,000 and £1m than in the previous year. Despite all the headlines given to

In the French style at £120,000
THIS stunning pair of 19th century blue john pedestal urns was the outstanding star of Tennants’ £1.8m summer sale at Leyburn on July 13-14. Consigned from a Leicestershire estate, the 9¼in (23cm) diameter urns, standing 15in (38cm)
on their marble bases, were not only superb examples of the unique Derbyshire fl uorspar, but the ormolu mounts, in the manner of the great French bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire, were particularly fi ne, hence the £15,000-25,000 estimate. With eight phone lines involved, bidding in the packed North Yorkshire saleroom quickly rose to £65,000, before the battle came down to two phone bidders. To the fascination of the hushed saleroom they fought it out until the urns were fi nally knocked down to a UK dealer at £120,000 (plus 18.5% buyer’s premium). Underlining their special quality was the fact that the previous lot, a pair of 20in (52cm)
tall, ormolu-mounted blue john obelisk candelabra, looking just about as impressive, failed to electrify the room in the same way, selling just short of the lower estimate at £11,000. A full sale report will appear in next week’s ATG.
