U.S. Mayors Voice Support of School Bus Stop Arm Cameras Te U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a resolution in June that

calls on local cities and states to allow school districts to install stop arm cameras to catch illegal school bus passers. Te resolution pledges to provide information to other mayors

and state legislators about the benefits of stop arm cameras to en- force local laws aimed to protect children around school buses. It also resolved to encourage mayors and other elected officials to consider all options when addressing the problem of illegal passing. Mayor Joy Cooper of Hallandale, Fla., in the Miami–Fort Lau-

derdale area submitted the original proposal stemming from talks with road safety camera provider ATS, which inked a part- nership this spring to work with school bus mobile surveillance manufacturer AngelTrax. ATS provides Hallandale with red-light cameras at intersections. Cooper said she has been an advocate for traffic cameras for

the past six years, ever since a motorist struck her father while in a crosswalk and a video camera documented the incident. She also discovered firsthand how effective these camera systems can be during her travels in Israel. Authorities there used surveillance

footage to apprehend a suspected child molester, noted Cooper. “I support technology to provide safety for our roadways and,

most importantly, our pedestrians — in this case, our children,” she told School Transportation News. At this writing, Cooper said she was seeking a meeting with

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie to develop a pilot program for area school buses. “I know at the state level we’ve been looking at this as far as our

roadways and speed zones around schools,” she added. “While we’d like to have a police officer on every corner and walking every inch of our city, that’s not really physically or financially feasible. Where technology can supplement those services and help our police officers, I’m all for it.” Cooper said public–private partnerships whereby camera

providers are willing to cover the cost of installing surveillance equipment on school buses are mutually beneficial. Compa- nies can recoup equipment and installation costs from ticket revenues, and that saved money can be passed along to the mu- nicipality or the school district.
