the MacLean’s became interested in helping to grow the high performance Hunter Derby sport. At that time, the only USHJA standalone Hunter Derby was in Chicago. With an introduction from Sue Leep, the MacLean’s met Carl and Rush Weeden who hosted the already popular Hunter Derby at Annali Farm. This would begin a great friendship be- tween the families. When the MacLean Family announced their first $25,000


derby in 2010, they began the daily schedule of working on the derby. Aimee and Lynne collaborated as managers, spending days preparing press releases, filling out paperwork, and continually calling trainers, riders, officials, and organiza- tions. They would make this a full-time job alongside travel- ing to California to show on both the hunter/jumper and dressage circuits, and keeping up with everything else that


goes into maintaining a successful business. The MacLean’s support included the Weeden’s, Diane Car-


ney, neighbor and trainer Julie Winkel, Phil DeVita, and the Northern Nevada and California horse community. Getting a standalone show off the ground in a location that is not a normal stop for most professionals was the most difficult part to overcome. They had the facilities, they had a derby field that George Morris would later declare, “The best turf footing he had seen,” they knew what they wanted, and they worked hard to make the inaugural derby spectacular. The MacLean family’s perseverance paid off with top judg-
