Tradition at its Finest By Lindsay McCall T
here is a hidden secret for equestrian enthusiasts along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Moun- tain Range. When vacationers are flocking to beautiful Lake Tahoe, just down the mountain is one of the most alluring and elegant equestrian
events in the United States. In 1947 Janice MacLean and her husband of Carson City,
Nevada, purchased land in the Lake Tahoe Basin. After trav- eling from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe throughout the year, with horses in tow, the MacLean’s decided to make Nevada
would make it possible for the family to train year round in the sport they loved. With multiple equestrians in the family, and a full service boarding and training facility, the MacLean’s have made their efforts a family affair. From the horse shows throughout the year including 3*** dressage shows, hunter and dressage clinics, and involvement with the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program, the MacLean’s live and breathe the equestrian sport. What started as a dream to create a destination equestrian facility for the Northern Nevada and California area, now
their permanent residence in 1969. Since the days of clean- ing stalls on the ‘pony track’ for 25 cents per day, Janice had enjoyed incorporating horses into every part of her life. This adoration was passed down to the entire family including her children. Her daughter Lynne, an avid rider, passed her love on to her daughters Sarah and Aimee. In 1990 Janice decided to build a facility for hunter-jump- ers and dressage for the Northern Nevada community. This
includes three generations. On a daily basis Aimee, grand- daughter of Janice, manages the Hunter Derby, marketing, and business development. Sarah, another granddaughter, uses her skills as a Veterinary Technician to oversee the daily health and well-being of the horses, while Lynne, daughter of Janice, keeps everything running smoothly.
