BOOTHBAY HARBOR/ROCKLAND – This past winter there was some renewed vigor in lobster boat racing. The reasons vary. The Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association added a Gasoline Class for engines over 502 cubic inch, but with no turbos or alcohol. There were rumours of boats gearing up with new engines and several new boats being built. The lobster fishery for the last couple of years has been very good and there might be a little extra spending cash to go have some fun. Then there was the agreement signed to film and try to promote lobster boat racing as a reality television series.

Each year on the eve of the Boothbay Harbor races, numerous boats gather at Brown’s Wharf on the east side of Boothbay Harbor. This year there seemed to be about 20 boats tied up, which was more boats than in years past. Sign-up was at Brown’s on Satur- day morning and the total was 50 boats, which was a 15 percent increase over the previous year.

The forecast was for a great weekend, but no one told the weather gods, as we woke to overcast skies, 10 to 15 knots breeze and temperatures in the low 60s. Still great for racing!

Some of the rumours were getting an- swered. Wes Shute of Stockton Springs was there, but without his boat DAYDREAMER [South Shore 30, Chevrolet]. He said that he was still waiting on his mechanic and his hope to be at Jonesport was now going to be

Searsport in mid-July. He also added that he did not have 2,000-hp in the new engine. Steve Johnson’s new version of the car-boat, which involves a Corvette, was also a no- show. He simply said he broke it, and did not have time to get her ready, but she should be fixed for the races in mid-July.

There were some no-shows. Galen Alley’s FOOLISH PLEASURE [Custom 30- footer, 638 cid Merlin] was in Rockland, but opted not to race in Boothbay following a run in with a former harbor master for going too fast through the moorings. Alley’s issue is that in gear his boat is doing over 15 mph. Since Boothbay has a new harbor master, one with a better understanding, Alley will prob- ably return next year. LORNA R. [Riley/ Adrian Beal, 1973, 496 Chevrolet], the wooden boat used for a mould to make FOOL- ISH PLEASURE, and run by Galen’s brother Rocky, was also not there. This was due to a minor health issue and hopefully she will be out for Bass Harbor. Bruce Engert’s THUN- DERBOLT [Custom South Shore 30, Chevrolet] was still on the hard, waiting on the engine mechanic. Last year Bill Grant’s DOUBLE G. [Crowley 36, 410-hp Sisu] was having a tough time getting passed Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35, 350- hp Cummins] and it was said that he was not coming to Boothbay, but would be at Rockland.

IT, which is a Calvin Beal 44 powered with an 800-hp Caterpillar diesel and would be racing in Diesel Class N. Alan Dugas of Yarmouth brought his new wooden 38-foot John's Bay Boat Co. powered with a 600-hp Cummins. She would be racing in Diesel Class J. There were some older boats out racing for the first time. David Grant of Farmington sold VENOM [Muscle Ridge 28, 250-hp Sisu] the end of the 2010 racing season and went without last year. This year he returned with EASY MONEY, a Northern Bay 28 powered with 218-hp Sisu and will compete in Diesel Class A.

John Albaum’s BUG HUNTER, a Young Brothers 30 powered with a 226-hp Isuzu diesel would compete in Diesel Class A. Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL, a Calvin Beal 36 powered with a 650-hp Scania, would be competing in Diesel Class J.
