Next up is a 30-foot power boat with jet drives coming in for bottom paint.

Activity abounds at North End

Gloucester Marine Railway, Gloucester MA has PHYLLIS A. up on the ways for repairs. She was built in 1925 by B. Warner of Kennebunkport.

I hate making mistakes and sometimes I really need to be just a little more careful. In the last issue I listed the following as Classic Boat Works from Edgecomb when it was actually Coastal Boat Works from Newcastle.

Coastal Boat Works on Route 1 in Newcastle always has some very interesting projects in their shop.

A 1956 Lyman was in this winter and had her deck framing and deck replaced. This was done using 1/16 inch mahogany veneer laid over marine plywood. She also received a new windshield, covering boards and electronics.

A 1947 Century Utility was in and restored. She received a new keel, garboards, and ceiling. They also removed her engine, a Gray Marine Phantom, which was redone.

Casey Yacht Enterprises in Freeport has a 25-foot Pursuit in the shop. She has undergone a bottom job, which included stripping, barrier coat and painting. Owner, Mike Casey said that spray painting the bottoms gives a much smoother finish and costs about the same.

In the next bay is a J-35, which is also in for a bottom job. She will be sprayed with Petit Vivid and was scheduled to be done in June.

A Carrera 29 is just out the shop and is going back together after some extensive work over the winter. They located areas of wet core and repaired these and then have done a complete cosmetic upgrade. They also replaced the keel with a new one. Casey hopes that she will be out racing later this summer.

Composites and Back Cove Yachts in Rockland as we roll into the summer months. The first Yanmar 8LV 320 hp engine was installed in the Back Cove 30 and met sea trial performance expectations, while reduced db sound levels exceeded those expectations. This new standard engine on the Back Cove 30 further improves the 2011 Motorboating Magazine Boat of the Year award winner. The shop is otherwise very busy with a full book of Back Cove 30s, 34s, and 37s all slated for construction in the coming months. Two of these upcoming 34’s are destined for the Pacific, with hailing ports in New Zealand and Japan. The crew is very busy as well infusing Sabre 48 hulls and decks every two and a half weeks with no end to that build rate in sight.

One of the busiest places on the coast is Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, who now has 80 people working on-site.

Like all boat yards on the coast spring commissioning is in full swing.

A Swan 63 is under-going her final preparation for the up-coming Newport to Bermuda Race. She received a new teak deck, new deck hardware, standing and running rigging, sails, and an electronics package. The Celine 54, SCULPIN, was in for new teak cap rails and electrical upgrades. The 106-foot Burger, STONEFACE, was nearly completely gutted and her interior is now going back in along with twin C-18 Caterpillar diesel engines. Her generator is

on its way and workers are also putting in the systems, a new teak deck is going down and the new pilothouse is ready for electronics. Paint work has been steady and there are still a number of boats scheduled to be painted early this summer.

Two Southport 29s are being assembled at the yard for delivery to a dealer. They are also going to make modifications to a tri-hull power cat, which develops issues at high speed. They hope by widening them by two feet that this will solve the problem. If this works they will then build a set of moulds and produce them when the owner has an order.

Coming in this summer for some extensive work, is the 80-foot Burger AURORA. She is in for paint, hydraulic davits, fire suppression system and tankage. She is scheduled to be at the yard from July to November.

As for building construction, work is started early this winter on building #1, which is the most northern structure. This is going to be used as a transient facility with heads, showers and laundry. It will also house the service yard offices.

They are also getting power to all their docks hooked up before the season starts.

Wesmac in Surry has a number of new and a couple of used boats in the shop being refurbished.

Just left was a 38 foot cruiser that went to Santa Barbara, California.

A 42-footer finished out several years ago for a customer from Camden has been lengthened to 46 feet 9 inches. She is HAZEL BROWN being finished out for sword and tuna fishing and will be used in one of the reality television shows. She has two staterooms and a full head below, with galley up and two fish holds in the cockpit. For power she has a 3406E Caterpillar diesel. They were putting the finishing touches on her with the hopes of having her over before the end of June.

In another bay was the 46-foot tuna boat KODIAK, which is being finished for a customer from Massachusetts. She has a double berth forward, head with shower to starboard and galley up. She is also powered with a 3406E Caterpillar diesel. She is scheduled to go over in this summer. Another sportfisherman is TULSA TIME 2, which is going to Massachusetts. She is a ten year old 42 footer and has been
