The cruiser GANNETT. Continued from Page 6.

goddam thing went down and just kept a’going. Going back and forth, we’d probably spent an hour, cutting her on the bandsaw, bringing it down and trying it out, bring it back a little bit more...”

Malcolm was an excellent woodworker and finisher on the boats, but he seemed to be a bit accident prone. One day Malcolm put a new blade on the tablesaw after he was done sawing some wood and found it dull. “A little while later, nobody else had used the saw, I went over and turned the saw on,” Drew said. “I went and put the piece of wood in there, and woosh! The goddam thing took off like a rocket! I says, ‘What in the hell was that?’ I couldn’t figure it out. I shut the tablesaw off and looked, and Malcolm had put the blade on backwards. The saw blade had just grabbed that thing and fired her across the shop.”

Unfortunately, Malcolm died a few years later of a brain aneurysm. He was at Carroll’s shop in Yarmouth one hot day when he complained of a headache. He got out of the boat to go get asprin, and collapsed on the dock. Carroll had gone up to town, Drew was the only one there, and the shop had no phone at that time. “I knew that he needed

more than what I could give him – should I go up to Casco Bay Ford and call, take the time away from him? Fortunately Royal came down and I told him ‘Don’t get out of the car! Get your ass up to Casco Bay, tell ‘em to get an ambulance down here! Something bad happened to your brother.’ “He says, ‘What happened?’ “I says, ‘Don’t even ask, get going!’ I was surprised, I bet you in 15 minutes’ time there were 50 to 75 people down there – half a dozen doctors.” Malcolm only lived a few hours after he got to the hospital.

CARROLL LOWELL IN YARMOUTH - EVEN KEEL MARINE

After Royal’s work on Commercial Street, he moved his shop to Pownal to build with his son Bill. At that time, Drew went to work for Carroll in Yarmouth. Carroll had started Even Keel Marine Specialties, Inc. in 1961, and was building many of Royal’s de- signs and some of his own.

They built a 36' boat of Carroll’s design for Ed Drisko of New Harbor; a 42' boat for John Sterling; a bartender for a man from Shrewsbury on Cousins Island; and a 50' sport-fishing boat called Cobra for Jack
