land is Rick Albertson’s ALL SET [Holland 38, 1,200 hp MAN] which was the only en- trant in Class L. Dixon Smith of Jonesport continued his dominance of Class M with a win, followed by Shane Hatch’s JILL CAYDEN [Calvin Beal 44, 700-hp Iveco]. Die- sel Class N, saw Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] just getting by Tom Clemons’ 4 GIRLS [Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] with ABIGAIL & CARTER third.
The winner of the Gasoline Free for All was CRY BABY with BLACK DIAMOND second.
Nine boats lined up for the Diesel Free for All, which was won by WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, but a close second was KIMBERLEY BELLE, and ALL SET third.
Just the top three boats from the Diesel Free-for-All came to the line for the Fastest Lobster Boat with the same results. As soon as these races were over most boats headed right for Rockland and began preparing for the next day’s races. Rockland almost became a dry town.
The big news was that Alfred Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Northern Bay 36, 900-hp Mack] was not racing after develop- ing engine trouble just days before. It was not known what happened but the boat was taken to Jim Minott’s shop in Brunswick to be repaired and hopefully she will be back for the Searsport/Stonington races.
There was one new boat racing, Scott Keenan’s DEAR ABBIE, a Northern Bay 38, powered with a 610-hp Cummins. He would be competing in Diesel Class J.
Some other boats entering for the first time included: Wayne and Colyn Rich’s WIDE OPEN, a Robert Rich built 26-footer, 225 gas engine, and would compete in Gaso- line Class A. Wesley Gove’s ALL JACKED UP, 210-hp Caterpillar, and Jeff Gove’s DOWNEASTER, Mariner Beal built 38 footer, 210-Cummins, both in Class B; Cyrus Sleeper’s QUEEN ANNE’S REVENGE, a Northern Bay 36 powered with a 265-hp diesel in Class D; and Nick Geyer’s OCTOBER SKY (ex-MILLER TIME), a Wayne Beal 36, 500-hp Caterpillar, and Jeremy Tyler’s ALL IN, Northern Bay 38, 500-hp Volvo, both in Diesel Class H.
Sunday was a perfect day with bright sunshine, and a nice cool breeze. It was going to be a fun day of racing with 70 boats competing.
In the Work Boat Classes there was no one in Class A. There were nine boats in Class B and this was won by J-BIRD. Again there as a little chop on the course and the spray flew as Class C made their way to the finish line, which was won by CASCO MISS. In the Gasoline Class A two boats came
to the line and it was CRY BABY first, with WIDE OPEN second. In Class B, Wayne Rich’s FROSTY PUNKIN [General Marine 25, 350 Crusader] took first and in Class C it was BLACK DIAMOND. There were no entrants in Class D and in Class E, FOOLISH PLEA- SURE made her debut and made the run at 57.7 mph.
In Diesel Class A, EASY MONEY bested LYNN MARIE. In Class B, MERGANSER took first again with Ed Glover’s GRACIE [Calvin Beal, Jr., 160-hp John Deere] a close second. SANDRA DEE won Class C and Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF [Libby 34, 300 hp Caterpillar] continued his winning ways for the weekend with another first. MISS KATIE put up a valiant effort but just did not have enough for KIMBERLEY BELLE. A renewed battle from last year MS. ROSE and DOUBLE G., and as they sped up the course it was MS. ROSE by a couple of boat lengths. Now came Class G, which was a real tight race the day before with EMILY GRACE upsetting SEACOCK. Today it was another real close race, but SEACOCK won by just feet. The dominate boat in Class H has been Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM [Northern Bay 36, 410-hp Sisu] for the last several years, but today he got a real race from Jeremy Tyler’s ALL IN, which fell just short at the finish line. Class I was a real battle the day before, but who would make adjustments for the win or a blown engine? Again the top three boats were all within a boat length of each other and it was LISA MARIE crossing with a half a boat length between her stem and that of WILD ONE. In Class J, David Myrick contin- ued his weekend’s winning ways with an- other victory. Just Justin Philbrook’s RISING SON [Calvin Beal 38, 375-hp John Deere] was in Class K and just Robert Young’s CYNTHIA LYNN [Northern Bay 38, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] in Class L. SIZE MATTERS bested JILL CAYDEN in Class M and 4 GIRLS edged out ABIGAIL & CARTER for the win in Class N.
In the Gasoline Free for All, it was FOOL- ISH PLEASURE streaking to an easy win when there was some coughing and sputter- ing and she died just a 100 feet before the finish line. However, she did manage to just float across before BLACK DIAMOND could get there. The cause was the blower belt on FOOLISH PLEASURE let go and he was done for the day. However, Galen said that this was an easy fix and that he would be at Bass Harbor.
In the Diesel Free for All, it was interest- ing as 4 GIRLS, CYNTHIA LYNN, KIMBERLEY BELLE and WILD ONE headed for the finish line. It was a real big surprise to see WILD ONE just edge out CYNTHIA LYNN followed by KIMBERLEY BELLE.
In the Wooden Boat Race it was EMILY GRACE’s day as she just edged out ABIGAIL & CARTER by a half a boat length, with MERGANSER a close third. In the final race of the day, Fastest Lob- ster Boat, just four boats came to the line and at the finish it was CYNTHIA LYNN, followed by KIMBERLEY BELLE and 4 GIRLS. Scott Wood said that he did not want to tempt fate and decided not to race this one. It was a great weekend of racing. At both races Exodus did extensive filming and said that they got some really good footage. Not only are they filming the races, but also inter- viewing some of the competitors. Exodus plans to be at every event, which should yield
some interesting footage.
One new rumour circulating involves James West and Glenn Crawford’s WILD, WILD WEST and Tom Clemons who has offered a 1,000-hp C-18 Caterpillar diesel en- gine. No one is really sure how well this will work, but it could be very interesting. A C-18 weighs about 4,000 pounds with a gear and in a 28-footer that could be interesting. After leaving Rockland it seemed like the project was a go and we can only hope she makes it out sometime this season.
