10. YOU LIKE THE CHALLENGES If you really like challenges, you can be assured that every day will bring a new batch of them. Therefore, there should be no need to streamline any processes or build a better workflow. After all, challenges are only challenges if they are going to be difficult to overcome!
09. YOU ENJOY DOING THINGS MANUALLY Since manual processes are so much easier to see, there appear to be many who just enjoy it this way. The piles of paperwork stacked around the office are simple reminders that each one represents something that should be done. Each manual task provides an opportunity to get exercise, for instance, picking up piles and moving them to other areas of the office, thus burning calories and making for a healthier lifestyle.
08. YOU LIKE WORKING LONG HOURS Where did the 8 to 5 idea come from in the first place? It is recorded that in his teens Abe Lincoln got up very early in the morning, before dawn, in order to get his chores done and then worked late into the night reading and self-educating himself. Hard work and long hours of doing things the same way as always are a good thing. It worked for Abe Lincoln, so it should be good enough for anyone.
07. YOU PREFER NOT TO TAKE VACATIONS The more you keep doing things “the old way,” the better chances are that vacations will not come into the picture. One of a set of similar English proverbs says that “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.” Since no one wants to risk giving the devil a workshop, you should all make sure you are in your own workshop rather than relaxing on a beach somewhere.
06. YOU THRIVE ON CHAOS Songwriter Bob Dylan wrote, “Chaos is a friend of mine,” and Spanish-born philosopher George Santayana wrote, “Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds.” (By the way, he was also the one who wrote, “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”) Thus, if you thrive on chaos and the confusion it brings, then you will find a friend in Bob Dylan, and what is so wrong with that?
05. YOU SEE NO NEED TO LET GO They say “Old habits die hard,” and no habits are harder to let go of than those formed through years of: “That is the way we have always done it.” In fact, in most situations you don’t even know why it was done that way, but that is the way you were taught. There is no need to understand it or let go of it.
04. YOU LOVE LONG LISTS OF THINGS TO DO The spiral bound pocket notebook is a wonderful tool for keeping handy a really long list of things to do. Of course, heaven forbid you leave your notebook at a restaurant! For many, the longer the list is, the more you enjoy the fantasy of being able to check off an entire sheet and rip it out of that notebook.
03. YOU SEE THE VALUE OF PENCILS AND LOTS OF PAPER Granted, some of you just enjoy the feel of a wooden #2 pencil in your hands. Something about the feel brings you back to the days of filling in “bubbles” on high school achievement tests. For you, the thought of doing it any other way would be a crime. After all, that is what trees are for, isn’t it?
02. YOU FEEL IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE OVER 1,000 UNREAD EMAILS IN YOUR INBOX Then there are those of you who are dabbling with some automation in your lives and have climbed to the pinnacle of using email. Maybe for you there is a real feeling of power and importance if there are over 1,000 emails in the inbox that have not yet been read, and at least 10,000 more that have not yet been deleted. Knowledge is Power, they say.
01. YOU HATE TECHNOLOGY There was a cartoon published in the Wall Street Journal just as the iPad was being unveiled which showed Steve Jobs holding one and saying, “It’ll simplify a lot of tasks you never had to do before.” And for those who just hate technology, that is what you see when you see a GPS, iPad or smart phone. To you, certainly this is just a craze that will only complicate your lives!
So, to all those who enjoy these things in their lives, keep on going! But for those who would like a bit more simplicity, a little more time for friends and families, and ways to do their jobs a little more efficiently, the options are there to make that happen. Automating processes, streamlining workflows and upgrading legacy systems are key components to getting out of the rut of “insanity” and building the business and “life” of the future. There IS a better way!
