BEHAVIOUR
Approach to behaviour We want UTC to be enjoyable for every student. Students should be able to learn, appreciate their lessons, make friends and be enthusiastic about UTC. So we want to encourage good behaviour and discourage behaviour that undermines learning or confidence between students or students and staff. We firmly believe that to succeed, students should work hard, be nice and offer no excuses.
All behaviours both positive and negative will be tracked and reported. All staff in the UTC, teaching and non-teaching, will be involved in maintaining the high standards of behaviour expected by all its members. We will reward desirable behaviour with praise and rewards and will impose consistent, clear and unavoidable sanctions for unacceptable behaviour.
Student code of conduct At Hackney UTC, students will be expected to act calmly and sensibly at all times (never running or shouting) and treat everyone as they would like to be treated. Respect and politeness should be extended to everyone. We want our students to strive to be successful and productive members of society from their first day in the UTC. Both inside and outside of the UTC, students are representatives of Hackney University Technical College and should demonstrate that they are proud to belong to it.
Further details of the code of conduct are available on the UTC website.
Rewards for positive behaviour We reward good behaviour and will hold regular celebrations of achievement which parents will be invited to attend. We will also send home postcards, certificates and gift tokens to reward students for good behaviour.
Sanctions for unacceptable behaviour We will respond to and follow up all instances of inappropriate behaviour in the classroom and around the UTC. Inappropriate behaviour includes any action which prevents a student or their peers from making progress.
Students who consistently fall below the expected standards will be supported to bring about a positive change in behaviour. Parents will be kept informed as soon as the UTC has cause for concern and intervention becomes necessary.
Detentions
The UTC reserves the right to hold children in detention for breaches to the code of conduct or home school agreement. Parents will be informed by a phone call / text that their child will stay for one hour after UTC on that day.
Exclusions If a student is given an internal or a fixed-term exclusion, his or her parents will be informed in writing and the reasons for the exclusion will be explained. Parents will also be asked to come into UTC to meet with their child’s teachers and discuss why this has occurred and how future exclusions can be prevented.
In cases where a permanent exclusion is being considered, a student may be sent home immediately, pending investigation into the incident which has occurred. A hearing will be set up by the UTC Governors to decide whether or not the student will be permanently excluded. Parents have the right to attend that hearing. For further details see the exclusions policy on our website.
Appeals You have the right to make representation to the UTC Governors about any exclusion, whether fixed-term or permanent, which you feel to be unfair. For more information about appeals, please contact the Clerk of Governors via the main office.
