THE CURRICULUM Curriculum

Hackney UTC has developed an exciting and challenging curriculum, with the ultimate aim of all students achieving a minimum of 5 A*-C GCSE grades, within the English Baccalaureate and to gain valuable experience of the workplace. Our students work longer hours than typical secondary students so all students benefit from an extended curriculum. Further details about our specialisms can be found on our website.

Our curriculum is strongly influenced by employers and universities, making education as relevant as possible to work. The learning experience will provide direct entry to employment and Higher Education opportunities on graduation from the UTC. It also helps to meet employers’ needs for high-level skills and broadens the offer to local communities.

We commit extra time to English and Mathematics. This allows students to quickly attain the proficiency in literacy and numeracy that will enable them to address their other subjects with confidence, including the sciences, humanities, modern languages and technology. There will be opportunities to study creative and performing arts in our enrichment programme. We also emphasise the wider

10

skills of citizenship and personal, social and health education.

In years 10 and 11 we will offer a full range of academic and vocational programmes and continue to support numeracy and literacy for those who have not yet achieved target levels.

Sex and relationship education Hackney UTC will ensure that sex education, including education about HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, is provided for all students.

As a parent you have the right to withdraw your child from any part of sex education that does not form part of the national curriculum.

Religious education Hackney UTC is a non- denominational UTC, providing education for children of all faiths and none. Religious education and assemblies will be delivered in line with the ethos of the UTC, and many different faiths will be explored.

The religious education curriculum will reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are mainly Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other religions represented in Great Britain.

As a parent, you have a right to withdraw your child from religious

education and collective worship. If you wish to withdraw your child from any aspect of either religious education or sex education, please make an appointment with Mr Michael McKeaveney, the Vice Principal. He will clarify with you the reasons for your choice; explain any practical implications of withdrawing your child and make arrangements for your child to complete different activities during the lesson time affected.

The specialisms

Hackney UTC has specialisms in Health and Digital Technologies and we plan to maximise the potential of both these areas for our students.

Digital Technologies With extensive support from local employers such as BT and Avanti, CISCO and other business at Tech City, we have developed a specialist curriculum that will focus on both creative media, including infrastructure design and support. Every term, students undertake an employer-led project. The following are some examples: • Working with Avanti on satellite technologies for complete UK wide mobile network coverage

• Working with BT on digital technologies

• Creating digital infrastructures to support digital broadcasts.
