news 7 New pool of international managers

Businesses are being offered a chance to gain international expertise through a groundbreaking programme run by the University of Portsmouth

International managers, including those with expertise in engineering, computing and manufacturing, and who have completed a year‘s full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) studies are being placed in UK businesses to run high-level projects.

The initiative is part of the University‘s MBA programme and Portsmouth Business School is the first UK AMBA-accredited MBA with a paid business placement, giving students the opportunity to earn while they learn.

Dean of Portsmouth Business School, Gioia Pescetto, said: “We are offering our international MBA students a year in industry to complete a work-based project with full academic support. It is an unrivalled opportunity for businesses small and large to gain expertise. All the students are graduates with at least three years‘ managerial experience and have completed one year of the taught part of the MBA.

“The students have expertise from the industry sector in which they have worked, a network of contacts from their home countries and also a second language. For the host organisation it could be compared to employing a specialist consultant at the fraction of the cost.“

Our MBA will provide you with the opportunity to develop your strategic problem-solving skills whilst mastering the latest business research knowledge and practice. We offer extensive involvement with real organisational issues embedded in an innovatively designed, AMBA accredited, programme.

During their placement of up to one year students will undertake a work-based project supervised by a Portsmouth Business School academic. The MBA with business placement course has been specifically designed for overseas students who wish to extend their studies through paid work experience. It provides them with the opportunity to work for up to 12 months in a UK or international organisation after their initial year of study.

SHOW YOU MEAN BUSINESS, GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

the value of a year‘s paid placement and having studied full-time for his MBA in a year, commented: “This is a great opportunity. It‘s a competitive world wherever you live and gaining a year of paid business experience in Britain will strengthen their CVs considerably.“

Portsmouth Business School has a long history of placing students in global organisations, including IBM, Rolls-Royce, Motorola and Hitachi. All placements are competitive and students will have to go through the application and interview process. The reputation of Portsmouth‘s MBA courses is excellent and much of the course content is informed by industry so many businesses return year-on-year to Portsmouth to recruit.

The Association of MBAs (AMBA), the leading accreditation body in Europe and, increasingly, across the world, provides an independent, and internationally-recognised certification of quality.

Now the director of two companies, Colvill Banks and Whitecrow Research, which made a net profit before tax of $2 million on a turnover of $6m, Srampical attributes much of his success to skills acquired while studying for his MBA: “The course helped me to work and collaborate with people from other cultures, which is essential in a global business environment. The joint projects undertaken with classmates from Asia, Europe and America have certainly helped me to better understand my varied clients.“
