Maryland Will Miss


Meagan R. Karn of Mt. Airy died suddenly of unknown causes on May 19 at the age of 28. An avid horse lover, Karn worked with horses at Paradise Stables in Mt. Airy and thoroughly enjoyed rehabili- tating and caring for rescue horses. She also had hunt- ed as a junior rider with the Carroll- ton Hounds. An autopsy report is expected later in the year.


Doreen G. Hill, Megan R. Karn Doreen G. Hill, PhD


PhD, a longtime resident of Upper Marlboro, died June 12 at the age of 61. A member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Potomac Dressage Association, Hill was deeply involved in Maryland’s horse community. She represented the Maryland Horse Council on the Equine Health Advisor y Commit- tee for the Maryland Depar t- ment of Agriculture and Mary- land Horse Industr y Board. Do- reen was selected to represent


MHC because of her background in epidemi- ology. She also advocated for and participated in the successful preservation of horse trails and equine recreation in the rural tier of Prince George’s County. Hill was a longtime volunteer


at the Marlborough Horse Trails held at Ro- saryville State Park and served as the treasurer of the Patuxent River Civic Association. She enjoyed breeding and caring for Quarter Horses at her farm, including her two personal horses, Chester and Chelsea. She was a long-time Equiery client, advertising her Quarter Horse stallion Cinzanos Czyz. Charles “Russell” Favorite, Jr. of


T urmont died June 8 at the age of 74. He was one of the original founders and members of the T urmont Riding Club. He worked for the Miller and Long Concrete Construction Company for 45 years before retiring. He also maintained membership in St. John’s Lutheran Church, the T urmont Lions


Club, and the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club.

Spring died June 4 after a brief battle with cancer. Jim was a graduate B pony club- ber and past U.S. Pony Club Board of Governors Presi- dent (1978-1980 and 1987- 1990). for both clubs, based at his Avalon Farm. He served on many USPC advisory boards and had a special interest in mounted games. He received the USPC Founders Award in 1998 and was named a Pony Club Legend at the USPC 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2004. Jim was also actively involved in the sport of eventing as a much sought-after cross-country announcer and cross-country controller. His voice could be heard over the loudspeakers at events all over Maryland and Area II. Elizabeth Anne Daly of Woodbine died on May 28 at the age of 91. T e owner of An- nondale Farm, Daly was a longtime state regent for the Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution. Daly was a former member of How- ard County-Iron Bridge Hounds and a supporter and former DC of the Howard County Pony Club. Other interests included the Cat- tail Creek Garden Club, Phi Sigma Epsilon sorority, the Howard County unit of


the American Cancer Society, Howard County Council of PTAs and the Liberty Hill Wom- en’s Club.


Bonita Farm’s Benjamin Boniface, 20, was killed on Monday, June 18, when his truck swerved off a farm lane into a fence line; ac- cording to local news reports, the fence posts penetrated the windshield, causing fatal inju- ries. He is the son of Billy Boniface (former president of the Maryland Horse Breeders As- sociation and current president of the Harford County Council) and his wife Barbara.



