Welcome to the July issue of Natural Awakenings, where we are at the height of summer! Every season brings its own traditions, and summer is no different. When I was growing up in Forman, North Dakota, the highlights of our summer days were gather- ing corn on the cob fresh from the farmer’s field, swimming at Silver Lake and riding our bikes until the town whistle blew at 9 p.m., signaling our curfew. Enjoy reminiscing about your youthful summers. Better yet, create new summer memories with Claire O’Neil’s suggestions in “Simple Summer Pleasures.” One of my favorite summer rituals as a kid was staying with my cousin and her family in Minneapolis for two weeks and swimming in their backyard pool every day.
What would summer be like without its fresh, special foods? From the garden to the grill, summer finds us enjoying the bounty of the season. This month’s Conscious Eating department highlights “Outdoor Entertaining” by Rénee Loux. A few recipes are included in this month’s issue and you can find even more recipes on our website. It’s probably not fair to follow a mention of food and recipes with a discussion of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), yet, when you think about it, what better place is there? I believe it’s important to discuss and educate ourselves on what happens when we bio-engineer food. In this month’s Wise Words, plant pathologist Don Huber shares “The Truth About GMOs.” It wasn’t that long ago that I was unfamiliar with GMOs. Even when you hear about them and understand what they are and the problems they can cause, it’s still easier to ignore and leave these issues for better minds to debate, discuss and decide. Unfortunately, that’s how too many decisions get made, as a result of the apathy of those who don’t feel qualified or equipped to deal with such big issues. You can only do what you can do, and I’ve decided that every day I can do something. Starting small, from where we are, becomes, if not easy, at least manageable. I experienced this last year when I determined I would read Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. The book had always seemed too massive to be tackled, so I backed away each time I considered it. Then I came across a book club on Facebook that aimed to make 2011 the year to read War and Peace. The participants could read and discuss online at their own pace and take most of the year to finish if they wanted to. Now that was something I found doable. I joined the group and took my time reading, and War and Peace ended up being one of my all-time favorite books. The characters, scope, history, plot twists, scenes and images are etched into my mind. It also helped me grow as a writer. It was a small thing, but it has had a large impact on my life.
Day by day, we help create our world and we move forward—or not. It’s up to us.
