go with the obvious, the economy. Fuel prices approached $4.00 per gallon and marine fuel up well over that, has to have some sort of impact, for sure. Also, I believe that weather has played an important part as this has not been a spring for small “Tin” boats to be out on the lake. It’s going to be interesting to see what impact this has had on the Winni Derby, which is just around the corner. In the interim here, I found time to take a trip up north to open up camp for the summer. Much to my surprise, all was quite well. No major storm damage around camp and what surprised me even more was that it appeared that all the mice went south for the winter. The usual procedure is
to leave about a dozen open cartons of D-Con out to keep the mouse popula- tion at a minimum. I have seen years when ALL of this has been gone within a couple of weeks. Not so this year. They only got into two of the open

packages and that was it! Needless to say that kept clean-up operations at a minimum. I got the water system
hooked up, swept out the camp, brought in the groceries, washed the windows and dishes and finally took a nice hot shower at the end of the day. I had a nice fire go- ing in the wood stove (it got down to about 23 de- grees that night) and sat down with a good book and an adult beverage. I have to say that this was a very relaxing day. The lake is full to the
brim and I never saw ONE boat on the water all the time I was there and the weather was perfect for a day of fishing. Oh well,
at least that job is done and out of the way.
After
all, I have to get the camp ready for the new mem- ber of our family, Amelia Grace, to pay her first visit to camp. Well, we’re pretty well caught up on our spring charters, boat decorating and camp openings, so… if the inclination strikes you & you want a nice day on the water, give us a call @ (603) 366-4115 or via our e-mail drhook1@
