note of just how good the spring fishing has been this year. I do have reser- vations as to what impact the early ice-out is going to have on the fall fishing. When we have ice leav-

ing us in late April, we can usually count on some outstanding fishing in September. However, past history has dictated that an early ice-out tends to throw off the salmon’s bio- logical clock, to some de- gree, and they enter into a pre-spawn mode early. When this happens, they will not hit a thing and it’s time to put the boat away. Such was the case in 2010. In 2011 the ice went out at the usual time (end of April), and we had some GREAT fall fishing. A good number of fish and hefty at that. Similar events have occurred in the past and I guess we’ll just have to wait to see what the fall brings. Life is too short not to

have a bit of fun once in a while and this spring was no exception. One of my close friends (lives in MA) was up for the opening of salmon season but went home over the Easter Hol- iday, leaving his boat tied to the dock. Well, it’s only natural that the “Easter Bunny” should visit &

hide a few eggs and what not aboard. A brief trip to the “Dollar Store” pro- vided us with a whole host of Easter decorations, as well as plastic eggs, to adorn his boat. When he returned there

were eggs everywhere in the boat. The Easter Bun- ny had even made a little grass nest on the dash- board, filled with eggs, etc. A bouquet of plas- tic flowers adorned the VHF antenna and a big blowup plastic chicken rode on the roof, next to his spotlight. Everyone had a good laugh and it was all taken in the spirit of “Fun.” After the appropriate

photos were taken and the more obvious adornments removed, all appeared to be settled on that ac- count… NOT SO! Again, being an opportunist, the

boat was visited again, af- ter dark, and a brand new item was attached to the bow! A three foot high, florescent green, plastic ALIEN. Now if you don’t think that is a sight to behold at 5am! Oh well, boys will be boys! Back to the business

at hand, spring fishing. I have noticed one sig- nificant issue this spring lack of fishermen on the water. I’m not sure if it’s the economy or declining lack of interest. In the past, on any given week- end in late April – early May, there would be 15 – 20 boats fishing in front of the Weirs and that many or more in Saunders Bay. Not so this year, at all. During the week there would also be a fair num- ber of boats on the water, but not this year. I have See GRASSO on 36
