Forty years after his death, a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been constructed on the National Mall, symbolically located on a direct line between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials in Washington, DC USA. The memorial consists of four major elements – forecourt, Mountain of Despair, inscription wall and Stone of Hope. The lighting design articulates these elements, while the balance of the site relies on interreflected light for visitor circulation and ambiance.

“The skillful placement and specification of light fixtures

creates a dramatic but realistic portrait,” one judge commented of the memorial.

The forecourt directs visitors to a passage through the symbolic granite mountain beyond which the stone pylon stands, seemingly cleft from the mountain. Inscribed on the stone are the words “Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope,” a quotation of Dr. King’s that is the central inspiration for the design of the memorial. Lighting reinforces this message, utilizing white-light LED sources to define converging diagonals. Concealed 70T6CMH accent

lights cast a glow on the looming Mountain of Despair. The shadowy passageway dramatizes the visitors’ arrival onto the Memorial plaza. A sculptural likeness of Dr. King emerges from the Stone of Hope to gaze metaphorically toward the Jefferson Memorial. 150T6CMH precision floodlights are mounted on two light standards positioned within flanking cherry blossom groves. The luminaires are fitted with custom glare shielding, spread lenses and neutral density filters, optimizing beam distribution and intensity.
