Observe the Date — Don’t Be Late! As we finalize details for the 19th annual STN EXPO, we want
to know: are you registered? June 25 is the deadline to register for the main conference at the $199 standard rate. Tereafter, the late registration price is $299. Standard rates to attend the trade show only ($40) and for guests ($65) are the same as early bird rates, but increase after June 25. Register online at
www.stnonline.com/attendees/registration to save your dis- trict or company some money while you increase your education! Another way to attend this year’s expo — at no cost — is
by participating in our Play2Win game, if you haven’t already. One winner of this trivia game receives an all-expense paid trip to the EXPO plus $100 spending cash. But you have to hurry
— the game ends June 29. Visit the Play2Win website at www.
stnonline.com/game for details and to enter. While you’re at the EXPO website, check out the Sixth An-
nual Peter J. Grandolfo Memorial Award of Excellence. You might know someone like the late Grandolfo, who was known throughout the school bus industry as a “Renaissance Man” who championed the yellow school bus and safe transportation for all students, particularly those with special needs. We know there are many like him out there, and this award
(white)
will recognize one lucky recipient at the show. If you know some- one like Grandolfo, submit a nomination at
www.stnonline. com/go/877. Te deadline for submissions is June 22.
Web Exclusive on NHTSA’s Research for Improved
Motorcoach, School Bus Fire Safety Visited our Web Exclusive section for a Q&A with a NHTSA spokesperson, who talks
about the federal government’s efforts in researching school bus fires. Te interview coin- cides with our May cover story on school bus fire safety (“Extinguishing School Bus Fires: More than Smoke and Mirrors”), which mentions NHTSA’s recently issued Sources Sought Notice (SSN) for motorcoaches. An SSN is NHTSA’s first step in conducting research that will result in safety guidelines for vehicles. Te article states that preliminary findings from the SSN, which are aimed at coming up with fire safety countermeasures for motor- coaches, could ultimately prompt NHTSA to consider applying those countermeasures to school buses. Catch the Latest STN ‘vlog’ and Blog In April, School Transportation News aired its first video blog, or “vlog,” yet an-
other interactive tool that brings current events to readers. View the most recent vlog on our home page or at
www.stnonline.com/blogs/daily-routes. Te May 4 episode discusses state activities that count the number of motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. Meanwhile, school bus driver Christie Smith of Olympia (Wash.) School District writes in our regular blog section about all the surprising, funny and interesting things that occurred one day during her “stupid easy” quarter- mile route. “I could not believe that all of those things just happened in less than 15 minutes in one day!” Smith writes.
