Getting It Right

Among the sighted, a myth persists, that keener hearing of the blind is a compensation for their loss. The truth though, is no quid pro quo, but the need to listen harder.

No guesses needed face to face, but in a room fraught with voices, whose saying what to whom can mean I’ll mishear some soft voice and she’s less of a guest, than a guess.

As difficult, the inner murmur, where voices never sound the same in a counterpoint of choices, as the listening poet strains for the word’s heard certainty.

Hindsight

Hindsight is a grandstand well-placed for long views down the course which remind you of a day when the runners caught you out.

Re-running that particular race, you know you should have known better than to bet on one sleek looker, because you liked her name, long legs and muscled flanks.

It’s better to keep your mind on memory’s form book, checking past performances, else you’ve only yourself

to blame again

for whyever you got whatever wrong. JOHN YOUNGER
