How to make your OWN Chocolate Welshcakes!

Above is a recipe my mum has, given to her by a neighbour, known, to myself and my brothers when we were wee lads, as Nan Jones. I have been told that the correct Welsh for Welsh Cake is picau ar y maen, and I’m sure Nan Jones knew this, as she was a Welsh speaker.

Well anyway, me and my mum had a go at making these Welsh Cakes, but with the addition of chocolate. Basically, we came up with 3 chocolate variants (also pictured above):

1. Add cocoa to the mix (or melted chocolate) to make the Welsh Cake browner in appearance, with a chocolatey taste.

2. Coat the top of each Welsh Cake with melted chocolate. 3. Add chocolate chips to the mix (this worked the best we found).

You could of course try further variants, such as chocolate chip Welsh Cakes with chocolate on top, or even chocolate chip with cocoa Welsh Cakes with chocolate on top, but this is possibly making things a bit too complicated. And of course, you could also make em square shaped!

Unfortunately, it turns out I wasn’t the first to come up with the idea of the chocolate Welsh Cake. There is an excellent Welsh Cake shop in Cardiff Bay, which has daily specials – some days they might be Welsh Cakes with chocolate, others with blueberries. I would recommend a visit. Also, the Welsh Cakes sold in this shop have the addition of a coat of sugar, like other Welsh Cakes sold on a commercial basis. If you’re still keen to try making your own, I would also recommend coating your chocolate Welsh Cakes with sugar. If you do make some, send us a picture, or even better send us one of your Welsh Cakes to sample!
