Raft
rest now lie back and float hear the water slap the walls of your little boat as if patting it dry the sky scrolls past like a story or a painting tree fingers reach down to touch you your face lips eyes or up to the blue or side-to-side waving you by you are the center from which everything ripples and all the ducks quack as they fly past feet furled and neat against teardrop bodies their bills point the way beyond your two eyes
see your possessions on the river’s banks those things you thought you needed absurd furniture the dust gatherers the faded colours dull forks chipped cups you float past easily like a knot releasing slips free like a white cell in one’s blood stream you flit quickly squeeze past attentive hands of strangers family
let them keep their memories if it makes them happy this is your vessel now let the river take you back out to sea the seagulls cry and cry at your departure don’t spare them another thought you are warm here in your boat sea breezes rocking and lapping the floating away
