2. New style


Muscles like body builders’ bulge as, aping vim, he struts his stuff. He’s good at snarling at the foe to show he’s big and bold and tough.


His central contract’s in the bank and now it’s time to prove his worth. He rumbles in to bowl, and all can feel the trembling of the earth.


He’s lifted weights, he’s run his miles, he’s even played a match or three. Six overs, though, and he begins to yearn for rest at lunch, then tea.


He rumbles in again, and yells for caught behind, though smacked for four. “Too much like work,” he wails within. The captain wants one over more.


One over more, then. In he comes, all full of false pizzazz and bustle. Another four. He limps away pretending that he’s pulled a muscle.
