1985 Director Shinji Somai received the Grand Prix for Typhoon Club

1992 Grand Prix-winning White Badge director Chung Ji-young, and Special Jury Prize-winner for About Love, Tokyo Mitsuo Yanagimachi with others. Yanagimachi later became a member of the international jury for the 19th TIFF


6th TIFF


1996 The Grand Prix-winning director of Kolya, Jan Sverak, held his award high in response to the cheers. Kolya later received the Academy Award for best foreign-language fi lm


10th TIFF


1987 The Young Cinema Competition Sakura Gold Award was presented to director Harry Hook for The Kitchen Toto

1993 Tsai Ming-liang’s fi lms have screened at TIFF many times. In 1993 his debut feature Rebels Of The Neon God won the Tokyo Bronze in the Young Cinema Competition


1997 Director Ademir Kenovic from the former Yugoslavia won the Grand Prix for The Perfect Circle and became a member of the international jury in the 11th TIFF


1989 Gold Award-winning director of Yaaba, Idrissa Ouedraogo, third from the left, later became one of the international jury members at the 11th festival


1994 Garin Nugroho (Letter To An Angel) and Yim-Ho (The Day The Sun Turned Cold) won top prizes in the Young Cinema and International Competitions respectively


1998 Now an Academy Award-winning director, Alejandro Amenabar, received the Grand Prix for his Open Your Eyes in the International Competition section

1991 The directors of Delicatessen, Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, expressed their joy in receiving the Gold Award

1995 Yasuko Tomita received the award for best actress for The Christ Of Nanjing, a fi rst for a Japanese actress. The Christ Of Nanjing also received the award for best artistic contribution


1999 Li Kang-yi, the lead actress of the Grand Prix-winning fi lm Darkness And Light, responded to the cheering audience with a smile
