extensive soft tissue coverage, as is necessary for

abdominal interven-

mobile equipment for immobilised patients. Compatible with all X-ray systems,

tables, vertical systems or

mobile equipment, the new system is also the ideal solution for transform- ing CR cassette systems into flat-panel systems, resulting in reduced examina- tion times and significant ltimproved patient flow. The new detector has all the features necessary to facilitate exam conditions:

it is portable and

lightweight yet robust, has a standard format (CR cassette), and is capable of operating for 8 hours on its removable battery. An installation can have one or more Pixium Portable 3543 Ezs, and each detector can be shared, with their infrared communication device mak- ing use possible in several different rooms. Like all Thales detectors, the new system with its cesium iodide scintillator provides best image qual- ity for an accurate diagnosis with the lowest dose possible. rotational angiography The new Syngo DynaCT 360 fea-

ture for Siemen’s Artis zeego, the only interventional imaging system on the market utilizing robotic technology means that for the first time an angi- ography system can rotate 360 degrees in six seconds to provide CT-like slice images with a field of view of 35 by 25 centimeters. Up to now the C-arm has taken 16 seconds to achieve such

tions. An exposure time reduced by more than one half brings a number of advantages: it is now unnecessary for the patients to hold their breath for so long during the exposure, and the images are subject to fewer motion artefacts. Furthermore, the physician generally needs to administer less con- trast agent. The clinical image shows a 35x25 cm large image of the liver taken with the Syngo DynaCT 360 from Siemens. The syngo DynaCT 360 software is a further development of syngo DynaCT, the system that creates CT-like slice images from the approx- imately 400 images made during a rotational angiography, and displays them on screen in the angiography suite while the intervention is still in progress. Particularly in the case of unexpected complications during the

intervention and also for immediate follow-up, this enables physicians to arrive at a precise diagnosis without needing to transfer the patient to the CT suite. The new application can record the field of view roughly twice as fast as before, thus reducing motion artifacts on the images. Additionally the examination requires less contrast agent and patients can be exposed to less radiation. The high quality of the soft tissue imaging facilitates needle guidance, biopsies or ablations, e.g. by radio frequency or microwave. SIEMENS ERLANGEN, GERMANY www.siemens.com

outscoring other display modalities in a side-by-side comparison that also included consumer displays and medi- cal displays, when viewing whole slide images (WSI). This involves the scan- ning (digitization) of glass slides to produce “digital slides,” an emerging method for storage and visualization of data for diagnostic, educational and research purposes. At UPMC, research- ers conducted a study in which 60 WSI cases were viewed over a three-month period using five different systems: a standard 14” laptop computer dis- play, a standard 24” desktop display, an optical microscope and two dif- ferent medical grade displays, one of which was a Barco Coronis Fusion 6MP DL system. The purpose of the study was to compare the user experi- ence among different display options. The Coronis Fusion 6MP DL medi- cal display ranked significantly higher than the other displays for image quality and diagnostic confidence in reviewing WSI. BARCO KORTRIJK, BELGIUM www.barco.com
