Suffolk Teacher Becomes 2012

Siemens STEM Institute Fellow Tim Kubinak, of Suffolk, Virginia, teaches sixth grade mathematics enrichment at John Yeates Middle School for Suffolk Public Schools. He received a B.S. in Wildlife Sciences from Auburn University in 2001; his internship and work experience as a wildlife damage management specialist for USDA’s Wildlife Services division led him back to the classroom, to share his knowledge and experience in the sciences to a new generation of STEM-interested students. In his eighth year of teaching, Tim has taught physical science, life science, and world geography, as well as 6th and 7th grade mathematics. “I believe that unique experiences, as well as the everyday situations through which we all live, are ideal opportunities for teaching and learning not only the basics of science and mathematics, but also the intricate physical workings of our planet, our universe, and ourselves,” says Kubinak. “The Siemens STEM Institute is a vehicle for beginning, and continuing, that type of STEM immersion necessary to create a new generation of thinkers, tinkerers, and innovators.” www.siemensstemacademy.com

The Hampton Roads Messenger 13 Applications Being Accepted for 2012

Summer Youth Employment Program Youth ages 14 to 21 who are looking for a summer job have another avenue to explore with the Summer Youth Employment Program. This program provides jobs and workplace readiness skills for court-involved youth and/or youth who live in our more challenged neighborhoods. These young people who often lack the skills required to obtain employment and succeed in the workplace can now include solid work experience and real skills on their resumes. Workplace readiness and financial literacy training will be required for all participants.

• The Youth Service Corps (YSC) is for youth ages 14 and 15. The YSC is a partnership with the Virginia State Parks. These youth will have an opportunity to work seven hours a day for a three week period (July 23 to August 10) in one or two Virginia State Parks. Each participant who completes the program will receive a $500 stipend. For most of them, this will be their first job in addition to being their first time visiting a state park. Applications are available at VBgov.com/YOO and must be submitted by July 2, 2012.

• This summer, youth ages 16 to 21 may be placed in an agency for an eight-week period,

June 25 to August 17 through the Youth to Leaders program. Previous placements have included a variety of city and community agencies such as Parks and Recreation, Human Resources, Emergency Communications and Citizen Services/311 Division, a community radio station and more. These youth may work up to 35 hours a week and will be paid $7.50 an hour. Applications are available at VBgov.com/YOO and must be submitted by May 16, 2012.

The Summer Youth Employment Program is funded through the Edward Byrne Juvenile Accountability Grant.
