Around Hampton Roads Forbes Announces Defending

Our Defenders Event First Listening Session To Be Held on May 14 in Chesapeake

Washington, D.C. - Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced that he will host a Listening Session, entitled “Defending Our Defenders” at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, Virginia on Monday, May 14th at 6:30pm. This town hall-style forum will include brief information from a Congressional delegation on the impact of potential defense cuts. A moderated “open mic” will allow participants to share stories, voice opinions and ask how defense cuts will impact our communities.

The Defending Our Defenders Listening Session will be an opportunity for people to share with lawmakers about how local communities will be affected by massive defense budget cuts. Congressman Forbes is seeking citizen input about the danger defense budget cuts present to national security, our men and women in uniform and local economies nationwide.

“The impact of looming defense cuts would be catastrophic to our military, communities and veterans. If no action is taken by January 1st, an additional $500 billion will be cut from our National Defense,” said Congressman Forbes. “I look forward to seeing firsthand how sequestration will impact Virginia installations and hear how these cuts will affect local communities.”

These scheduled defense cuts would cause roughly 200,000 active duty service members to be forced to leave service, which would be the equivalent of eliminating the entire Marine Corps. Future military veterans and retirees could have their retirement pay significantly delayed and/or reduced. Virginia alone would lose 122,800 jobs and $10.5 billion in Gross State Product.

Additional event dates and locations are being planned and will be released later.

All concerned citizens, military retirees, veterans, small business owners, defense contractors, and local Chambers of Commerce are invited to attend. To RSVP, please visit: defendingourdefenders.eventbrite.com.

One of the greatest gifts that we have is passion. It is interesting that the first definition of Passion with a capital “P” in Merriam-Webster is “the suffering of Christ between the night of the Last Supper and his death.” The next definition is

“strong feeling.” God has gifted us to have strong emotions. Among these are love, rage, anger, and sexual desire. We do not get very much done if we lack passion or strong feelings. Passions (as plural) are emotions distinguished from reason. It is dangerous to act on passions alone without some reason. But have you ever experienced being with a person that was so logical and thoughtful, but possessed little or no passion. My friend and colleague, Dr. Sir Walter Mack, Jr., Senior Pastor of Union Baptist Church in Winston Salem, NC has written a wonderful book entitled Passion for Your Kingdom Purpose. He makesa profound statement in that book. “Developing passion for your kingdom assignment begins with these two concepts: a ‘need’ and ‘Here am I; send me.’” Before this statement, he has already established the necessity of dong ministry from a kingdom of God outlook. He says, “Passion is ignited by revelation of God

and His Kingdom. When we seek first the Kingdom of God, we desire God’s mind and heart for our lives.”

I think it is sad when a much needed ministry fails to get moving because there is no one with a passion for it who sees it as an assignment from God. Passion comes when the apparent need is met by the believing heart who hears in his or her spirit “I am the one.” Mack declares that the characteristic of God that stands out most for him is that God is always on some assignment. I share that awe with him.

God is up to something. God is orches-

trating his plan, and you and I are includ- ed in it. What is God up to at Genesis? What is his assignment for us? Well, God is redeemer. He is about bringing us back into a relationship with Him. He is about saving our lost souls and reclaim- ing his people. He is about giving us life in all of its fullness.

I suspect that the most miserable per-

son in the world is the person who is do- ing something on a continuous basis for which he/she has no passion. Remem- ber, our passions can be direction signs for our lives. Our strong feelings that seek fulfillment tell us something about ourselves. How do we take these strong feelings and line them up with God’s pur- pose and assignment for us? I pray that all of us at Genesis will find that need in our family, church, community, school or place of employment and say “Here am I. Send me.”
